Offline | OK had the software upgrade completed week ago Friday. Results 1) Fwd (D) no problem - let it warm up for a minute or two and no lurching. (Before the patch 2-5 minutes wouldn't help) 2) Reverse - better but not fixed. Gone is the slipping forward on a hill. New is the bucking in reverse - like a newbie backing a standard transmission. Also new - Didn't stall but began idling rough at a light after about 2 minutes. Dropped into N and tapped the throttle lightly twice and it smoothed out. Hasn't died on me but makes me a bit uneasy. Question - How many other folks have the same problem (s) AFTER the upgrade? Could it be an improper/incomplete upgrade - rushed and didn't do all the steps? |

Offline | Which software update version did you get? 32 or 32.1? I had similar issues as the ones described in your post and once my dealer downloaded 32.1 each and every single one of them dissapeared. I have absolutely no issues with the reverse gear or any sort of rough idle whether I have the A/C on or off. The idle quality in our Cooper CVT is butter smooth after the 32.1 update and has been ever since it was updated 4 weeks ago. If I were you I would take the car back to the dealer as it appears to be that the update procedure was not completed properly. '02 MINI Cooper CVT On Order: 2004 MCS (Est production date: 9/5/03) |

Offline | I just took my CVT in on Monday 3/31 for the latest software upgrade (I believe it was probably 32.1 but I thought I heard the service rep mumble something about using update # 33. I'm not convinced that the service rep that I deal with is all that knowledgable). I had both the near stall at start up and a very pronounced clunk/lurch when engaging the transmission into "Drive" when cold. both of those problems are gone. No new ones have developed. We've only had the car back for 2 days but right now I am very happy ![]() Droid Reston, VA ------------------------------------------------- Chili Red/White Roof MC with Panther Black leather seats and Chrome bumper inserts |

| MINI2 Regular | FWIW, I'd received 32.1 about a month ago, and...it pretty much seemed to have no effect on the cold lurching and near-stalls. (Reverse is fine for us, but Drive is a problem.) At least I think we got 32.1. At the moment, the car's back at the dealer, getting a new windshield (CURSE the stone that hit us while we were on vacation!), having that airbag light looked at, and addressing our problem lurching and seriously screechy brakes. I've been getting a lot of calls from corporate MINI following up, and they tell me the dealer now has CD 33, so maybe I'll be getting that. (BTW, our loaner Cooper doesn't lurch or screech. Pretty nice to see what's possible, so I hope they nail it this time.) Anyone else get the letter from MINI corporate about the CVT transmission fluid recall? It seems that some were produced with low-viscosity fluid, which can cause clutch slippage and, ultimately, total transmission failure. They're recommending recipients of the letter take their cars in as soon as possible for a fluid replacement, so I'm hoping to have the dealer do that as well. |

Offline | Early 2003 production Cooper CVT's made in September-October 2002 were affected by the low viscosity oil applied to the CVT transmission. I am affraid that even after repeated flushes of the lubricant by the time these transmisions were serviced under the recall notice, some serious damage already was done, hence, the same problems reoccur on these cars time after time even post software upgrade. I think the early 2003 CVT's have experienced damaged transmissions due to the application of low viscosity oil at the factory. I am glad I got one of the last 2002's (Early August 2002 build) with 5,500 troublefree miles and no problems. The 32.1 software updated addressed each and every one of my CVT issues that have been discussed ad naseum in these forums. '02 MINI Cooper CVT On Order: 2004 MCS (Est production date: 9/5/03) |
