Question Smelly a/c and loud engine

When I turn my Mini on, and the a/c is on, there is a weird smell that sort of smells like childrens plado. It only lasts a few minutes and then its gone. Anyone know what this can be? It hasn't been happening to me before, just started today.

Another problem I noticed today is that my engine is very loud. I started my Mini, got out, and the engine was loud. I know its not as loud as it usually is. I think it may be the fan thats really loud, but I'm not that much a car person. My temp gauge is normal, but the fan is still really loud. When I turn the car off the noise seems to vanish. Can anyone help me?

Can these two problems be related?

AC stink is either bacteria or fungus growing in the HVAC system somewhere. Hopefully heat will kill it. If not, you may need to change the pollen filter as sometimes it gets trapped in there.

As for loud, this is with the engine on, right? Car not moving or anything? And you think it might be the fan? Hmm. I'd think the engine would be louder than the fan with the engine on.

I have also had this in my car a couple of times and put it down to...

SMELLY FEET!

Before allowing your passengers a ride in your lovely new Mini, ask them when was the last time they washed their toes??
Maybe do a toe check if you have even a slight suspicion!!

My theory is that the air circulation picks up the bad odour from the floor area - and chucks it back in your face -
hence the cheesy smell you may be experiencing for short periods of what should be fun drive time

I now perform strict foot checks before any passengers are allowed entry to my Mini
------------------------

Don't go to www.smellyfeet.com to see the sort of thing I mean...

I said don't go but you wouldn't listen!

I am of course only joking!

Yup, all those things above. Except I don't know if its the fan. All I know is the engine is really loud.

lol, it couldn't be smelly feet, I can smell it coming straight from the air vents.

Damn, the heat idea didn't kill it.

It still smells, not so much like plado anymore, kinda like a gas/clay smell.

Would my dealer be able to help me?

Hmm, well it sounds like you might want to have it looked at then. Have them look at the pollen filter too regarding the stink.

Hopefully it is just a hole in your exhaust or something. Cars with holes in their exhausts or cracked exhaust pipes are very loud (had that happen many times). Or your air filter pipe came off or something. Many guys are spending good money to make their Cooper's louder and here you complain about what you get for free

Make sure your aircon is dripping water from underneath the car when it's turned on. If this water is being retained it could be the source of your smell.

I think the engine sound is pretty normal, the loaner Mini I just had did the same thing, so I guess its just the a/c when the car is at a standstill.

I'll just see what goes on with the smell and get back to everyone.

No, but I'm going back up this Tuesday hopefully for the exhaust, so I'll ask him when I'm there this time for sure.

Hey Max,

I haven't asked my dealer, yesterday they only installed my H&R springs. I'm going on Tuesday for the Magnaflow exhaust, so I'm going to ask him then.

However, the smell seems to be pretty much gone. So we'll see how everything goes.
