Offline | How widespread are transmission failures? I'm reading some reports of transmission failures that require the transmission to be replaced (on largely US roadfly board). Is this a widespread problem? Or, more to the point, how many of you MCS owners have had the need for a new transmission replacement under warranty? |

Offline | I haven't heard of any failures with the 5-speed, except for the cable disconnecting from the transmission which was addressed with a recall - simple fix. Mine feels better than new with over 1 year and 17K miles on it. I did however read a while back (maybe last year sometime right after the MCS launch) about a few MCS with broken 5th and/or 6th gears ![]() |

| There will always be a few that go bad, that kind of thing happens. However, it is not widespread, and the chances of it happening on your car are VERY slim -Andrew |

| MINI2 Master | There are failures with the 5-speed for sure. Just had mine replaced a couple weeks ago. Check other threads in this forum and you'll see them. Offline | transmission failures - which trannys? Is the same thing going wrong with the ones you've replaced and are they all the same type of tranny (5 sp/ 6 sp/ CVT)? Or are there a variety of problems for different trannys? Thanks |

| MINI2 Master | My new tranny is already a bit hard to get into first from neutral. Hope it is just wearing in... Still fine getting into reverse and no clanking on hard starts but not impressed. If it eats another tranny soon I'm not sure what I'll do.Harry MINI Cooper Cabrio: now the car with go cart handling really feels like an open go cart! Offline | I have a 2002 Cooper CVT with 7,000 troublefree miles. Harry: Sorry to hear about your tranny failure....what happened? You should upgrade to a CVT or a Cooper S. ![]() '02 MINI Cooper CVT On Order: 2004 MCS (Est production date: 9/5/03) |

| MINI2 Master | My car was making a horrible clanking noise in first gear. Must have been slipping teeth or collars or something. Only happened under heavy loads at first but got easier and easier over time until it was quite bad. Hope the shock of those clangs hasn't done any harm to the engine. I've seen the odd complaint about the Getrag and the CVT too so I'm not sure any are really safe at the moment! Time will tell. I love clutch and gears so the CVT isn't for me but if they have to replace another tranny I might entertain offers of swapping for an S. Or if they want to put a Getrag in mine in place of the Midland Powertrain unit, I'm willing to be a guinea pig ![]() Harry MINI Cooper Cabrio: now the car with go cart handling really feels like an open go cart! Offline | I have read somewhere that the Midland made 5-speed transmissions come with intentionally made glitches by disrupted plant workers. Harry, maybe the time has come to entertain the idea of a new MCS? '02 MINI Cooper CVT On Order: 2004 MCS (Est production date: 9/5/03) |

| MINI2 Master | If it's replaced under warranty, no questions asked, then MINI/BMW obviously feels it is because of a defect in the part. My 5-speed never saw anything silly done to it. Driven hard, yes, but that just means asking the tranny to work with the attached engine. If it can't take the max torque of the engine then there is a serious design flaw. And I don't mean with hi rev clutch dumps either, never did one in my car. Harry MINI Cooper Cabrio: now the car with go cart handling really feels like an open go cart! Offline | The description of teeth slipping in high load was how mine started in 1st gear and progressed quickly until I was disabled, luckily at my home. The dealer claimed this to be somewhat common. I have an early build date 2002. I hope you dont have this. Wave |

| Let's Motor... | MINI has told me that they will no longer have that 5 speed tranny in their cars. they will have another manifacture build them. so far i have only seen 2 six speeds fail and that was from lack of oil(cv shaft seal leaking). the six speed in my mind is very well built. let's motor |

| MINI2 Master | Yes, we're told that a 5-speed Getrag will replace the 5-speed Midlands Powertrain gearbox but not until sometime next year. Until then, we have to keep hoping our (replacement, in my case) Midlands boxes will last... Harry MINI Cooper Cabrio: now the car with go cart handling really feels like an open go cart!
