Offline | Sunroof rattles and its driving me nuts !! Has anyone else out there had a problem with the sunroof rattling, my mini has been to the dealer twice for this problem, they tried the usual stuff putting some grease on the runners, and tightening the mechanism, still it rattles just as bad if not worse - it happens on tilt or when its fully open. The only option left is for a new sunroof to be installed, don't really want that cos' I've heard that it could start leaking, anyone out there whose had the same and got a fix |

Offline | Yep when your roof is open, look at the two flaps that are in the up position, you should notice wear places where the retractable roof has been rubbing, put some small velcro pads, this is what is causing the raddel and making the sound, the two plastic flaps move aganist the window when closed, use the wear spots to determine where to put the padding. this should fix it, you may have to adjust a little to you get the postion correct. Hope this helps DMonk |

Offline | If you search the Faults and fixes forum for sunroof, it will pull up the relevent threads for the velcro spot soln. My mini is going in next week to have the sunroof rattle fixed. They might replace the cassette - so I hope it will not leak. |

Offline | Well thanks for the input, have also checked the fault/fixes forum, after a couple of tweeks and a test drive last night still as bad, sunroof now grating when closing, the noise seems to be coming from the back supporting brackets, looks like I'll be back at the dealer this weekend, maybe I will end up with a new cassette/mechanism too. After the amount of times I've been in for sqeaks, rattles and recalls which haven't been done properly, they all run for cover when I appear in service reception, and don't even have to ask the reg. number they just know !! Maz if your dealer replaces the cassette can you update this thread with the results, after a good downpour of course - cheers |

Offline | Mine rattles too when fully open. If anyone knows what the fix is for this, I would be very grateful. Putting velcro on the flaps doesn't help, as the sound is coming from the back of the opening, not the front. I also notice that when the roof closes, it makes a 'clack!' sound on one side, which it never used to do. I can't find the cause of either of these problems! 2002 Mini Cooper 1979 Ford Mustang 2.3 Ghia BRG Cooper with white roof, 16"alloys, auto a/c, sunroof, seat heaters, sport suspension, shorty aerial |

Offline | i have noticed the sunroof rattles more when its hot outside. the mini sunroof is the worst i have come across, wish i got aircon instead sometimes.sounds like going to the dealer is a complete waste of time so i'm gonna tackle it myself. my plan is to grease every screw and washer and every support point. wish me luck. if i dont succeed i'm gonna weld the damn thing shut! knowledge is power |

Offline | Back down William Jacks (Sunningdale) on Saturday morning, Sharon (very helpful) in Service reception has agreed all of my problems have gone on too long and its unacceptable, so have decided to go for a complete new sunroof to be fitted, I've been assured it won't rattle any more or develop any leaks - lets wait and see, they've even agreed to replace my scratched seat backs - hopefully it will be OK and be a happy Mini owner once more Last edited by Sarndee : Jul 2nd, 2003 at 05:55 PM. |

Offline | If your sunroof scrapes or squeals when opening or closing and rattles when open, try the procedure I did on mine: http://www.type2.com/bartnik/mini_sunroof.html I did this several months ago and the squealing and rattling have not returned. |

Offline | And I thought it was just myself going mad, when I said to the dealer, its worse when its hot. Keep at the dealer.....ours tried to reassure us by saying "we get 60K cars in here with similar problems", my answer to that little ditty was "I dont care if the MINI cost £100, I want the bloody thing to work correctly"!! Offline | Finnaly got my MINI back last nite. The dealer has fitted a new cassette. Went for a good blast and positioned the sunroof in all its various positions. I am glad to report no squeeks or rattles - yet! Will have to wait until it rains to check for leaks - being in the UK shouln't be too long. |

Offline | Same problem I just picked up my car from the dealer after having the steering column replaced, and getting the sunroof fixed for the exact same problem you mention. They said that they had to drop the headliner, and adjust the cassette (?), and that will cure the problem. It's raining today, so I haven't had the opportunity to try it out for real, but if it does come back, I'll be trying Seans fix. Incidentally, I also had a really good 'crack' noise whenever I opened the roof past the 'popped' position, and the problem seemed worse when it was hot out, or at least had the sun baking on the roof. I still need to cure the cold weather rattle that comes from the wind deflectors, but at least I know the cure for that one, and can deal with it myself. Steve 2002 Pure Silver and Black Cooper |
