Unhappy Is this normal?

The other day, after doing quite a bit of highway driving in my Mini on a hot summer day. I went to a picnic, and parked my car. My dad told me about 2 minutes later that my car's engine was making a loud noise. When I went over to investigate, my engine was humming really loud. I thought it was strange because the car was off. Is it normal for the engine to do this when it's really hot? Kind of a way to cool itself down? Or is this something I should be calling the dealer about?

Thanks,

Adam

was the "humming" noise the cooling fan?

a lot of cars do this, if it is hot, the speed of the car can cause aircooling to cool the engine, but once stopped, the air is not passing the engine so the temp can rise, causing the fan to come on... this can happen a lot, how long since the car stopped did the fan come on, and how long did it stay on?

Not sure if MINI's have live radiator fan when the engine is off, but if so it's almost certainly the fan still running. If so it's not something to worry about.

Thanks guys.

The fan came on shortly after I left it alone, probably about 10-20 seconds, it only lasted I'd say a minute or two.

it sounds almost definatley like the cooling fan.

and yes the fan (at least on my late 2002 ONE) does come on when the ignition is off (if the engine is hot enough) he he, I just finished a blat home after boring work, and hammered the car big time, it was gasping for air after that.

I got out and decided to get shot of the bugs, by the time I had got the bug spray out of the house, the fan was going like mad, but only for a few minutes. I opend the bonnet and think I could have cooked an egg in the engine bay, it was a bit toasty!!!
