CVT lunging from 1st to 2nd

When driving my 2003 MC in Manual Shift mode, I get a very strong lurching or lunging when shifting from 1st to 2nd at high RPM.
Is this normal or another of the Mini transmission problems (which might be sorted out with a software upgrade) ?

I've never come across that problem myself.

Get software update 33.2. All lurching symptoms has dissapeared ever since the update was done 3K miles ago. As a matter of fact my transmission lurching went away after software update 32.1

Dealer honesty...

How can I "force" the dealer into doing this if he disagrees and how can I then confirm that it was done. Can they provide some sort of printout or something or do I take their word for it?

I think you should be able to believe the dealer's answer to your direct question about the software version in your car.

I quickly checked our service receipts finding that there is no standard notation for software version (like Mileage In or Mileage Out) on the BMW-approved documents, but each change was noted on the receipt for that day. When asked, I been given the correct answer each time.

As this software continues to be worked and new versions released by MINI, it's important to note that they are not in the business of just upgrading to the latest iteration. The idea is to resolve identified problems like the lurching described.

I wish a web-based "Support Center" were part of the Owner's Lounge where we could simply self-diagnose some of these questions. It could be twisted into good marketing for MINI. I've never seen a list of the software versions and what they are supposed to do.

I have a theory on the 1-2 steptronic shift thing....
(this really only applies under full force acceleration)
I think it is triggered by an 'ease up' of the accelerator just prior to shift. I find that if I am careful not to ease the accelerator before the 1-2 shift I get a smooth transition. If I let up on the gas just before I pull the shifter, (under hard accel) I do get a jerky 1-2 shift.
If I stick to the gas, I get a smooth shift.

BartMack may have hit a good one here.

The electronic throttle establishes a "target speed" in the EMS2000 computer map for acceleration. Moving the pedal re-establishes this map creating changes in behavior, which may not be what you want. Finding a correct pedal position and holding it steady there seems to be an important Cooper CVT driving skill.

It is true that lifting slightly as you would for a manual transmission gear change is not needed, and not desired, for the CVT.

Good point. I've also found that the gear shifts in steptronic mode are much smoother if you keep a steady position on the gas pedal.

This would indicate that CD#34.0 must do something good for the Cooper CVT. Thanks for the followup, nfo. What did your service advisor say about the new software?

Our dealer used the term "34" (not "34.0" which has been typical in this casual BMW naming game). After they gave up whole number jumps (at "30" I think), the x.1 or x.2 idea showed up for interim versions. I'll try to check here again, but they said "34".
