EML Light, engine failure, my mini stopped on highway!

Hey guys,

My car is August 02 Mini Cooper

Last week when I was driving my mini brought up the EML light and lost power. Lucky it was on my road and I switched off then on and kept going.

Over the next few days the car stalled sometimes just after starting, or when reversing.

So I booked it in to the dealer but was going to have to wait until the 1st to get a loan car.

But yesterday when I drove into town (Brisbane) I was right near the city (no emergency shoulders/pull over zones!) and it was 3 lanes and the car decided to put its EML light on and the engine lost all power and I had three lanes of traffic around me. grrr!

I turned car off then on and it stalled.

Tried again and it worked (Thank god!) So I called mini and said I need a loan car right away and they managed to find me one.

But it was stressful that it happened and I was lucky not to cause an accident.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? What ended up resolving it?

Thanks,

Neeshil

Same type of problem, on my '03 MC purchased mid February.

Engine cutting out fully, going to "half" power, lights coming on like a Christmas tree. All in a random pattern, nothing I could pinpoint that I was doing the same each time it happened. First happened at 4600 miles (just once) then went crazy at about 8700 miles.

Up to the dealer at 9600 miles, they replaced the engine bay wiring harness and the throttle body. Told me that the problem was with the physical connection between the two.

Now at 14,600 miles, no issues.

hmmm... yeah I purchased my car on May 8th (so nearly 3 months old). It has 5000km's on the clock (3125 miles)

Lets see what they say.

Interesting thing is that the same thing has occured in my mum's 318i (current model) and also my friends 325ci (2002 model)

Your first post said you had an '02? It's an '03, right?

The tech that worked on my MINI gave me the scoop on the problem, seems as though it's a known issue.

Other than that this car is wonderful. Too much fun for a reasonably priced auto.

nah.. August 02 build, May 03 purchase.

Yeah my service guy just called. He said they recently got a service bulletin.

Basically with the EML motor, there is a plug that goes onto it and it is a known issue that it isn't secure enough and so it comes loose, causes open circuit, and the EML cuts power, so they are ordering up a new, the wiring plug/harness which is a lot firmer.

(Known issue for BMW and Mini)

I must say I am very impressed with BMW/Mini Service section at Brisbane BMW. Considering I took it in at 4pm yesterday and I get a call at 11am the next day! And plus the staff are exteremely friendly and efficient!

I was lucky to purchase my MINI from the better of the two dealers here in Massachusetts. I can't talk these guys up enough....they actually seem to care.

Aug '02 builds, May '03 buy? Is this the normal timeframe for actual delivery after manufacture, or do the MINIs sit on the lots for a long time waiting for the people who are farther along the evolutionary chain to come by?

Nah it was silly me double checking the build date before i took delivery. I was really annoyed at the dealer for pulling this fast one on me, particularly as I had been telling him I was wanting the 03 model for various reasons (new headunit, some different parts replaced etc..) and he still didn't inform me that it was old model. grrr

i made the mistake of assuming that it was halfway through 2003 and it would be a 2003 car.! duh! silly me! oh well!

So when you purchase make sure you put on the contract the build date of the mini.

I picked up my mini this afternoon. all seems good. I missed it. The BMW 318ti compact was a good loan car but I am glad to have my mini back.

I will let you know if I encounter any more problems.

Same problem several weeks ago and the FIX was changing out the engine wiring harness with a "new and improved" version...according to the service rep...haven't had a problem since on my 6/02 built MCS.

MY MCS broke down on me yesterday evening (on the way home from the airport and fully laden with bags).

It stalled on me coming out of Tesco Express about 5 miles from home. It then stalled again at a junction a couple of miles further on (but started up again after a couple of minutes) and finally quit on me about a mile from home.

Luckily, it broke down right outside a pub so I gave MINI a call and went inside for a couple of pints.

Seems to be an overheating issues, although the temp gauge didn't show this until it finally broke down. The left (as you face the car) side of the radiator was hot and the right side was cool.

I'm a bit annoyed that the car has broken down on me within a few months and 2,000 miles of ownership. However, I can't quibble with how MINI has reacted - breakdown truck turned up quickly and took us home, it's coming again tomorrow to take the car to the nearest dealer (Southbank in Kennington, used to be Coopers - anyone got an opinion on them?) and providing me with a courtesy car this weekend.

This is the self-preservation society

Yeah Ziggy, it is a pain having it break down like that! grrrr. I think the 'symptoms' your mini has are a lot different and I don't think it is that same EML issue that I had. (But then again I am not a technician! )

and BakerJC the fix is the one described by COOPERation.

I want to know if they are going to do a recall. Considering that the same problem was on my mum's BMW sedan and my friends BMW coupe and now my mini!

Fixed mine, hope you have success. It's a beautiful thing when it works.
