United-States Cooper S Stumble Update - MINI USA

We had a MINI Rally at the local SoCal Dealership yesterday (Brecht - Escondido)

PICTURES

Over 100 MINIs, and official representatives from MINI USA.

Given the opportunity, I asked about a fix for my 03 MCS 1st gear stumble

Answer was clear and concise

1) It's a known software issue

2) They are working on a fix for a new SW release

3) If you want a fix now, your dealer can send your ECU back to NY to be flashed with older (stumble free) software

No issue that it wasn't a real fault, or that it wasn't fixable now.

Chris.

Chris.

First of all, thanks for the information, now, on what they've told you....

Would that be the older software with the cold start issues?

Seemed to be that about when that was 'cured' the stumble issues really came to head.

We've already been told they know about it, and people have been told for a long time that they're working on a fix. I really hope they come up with the goods soon.

could someone please specify the stumble for me? Are we talking that stutter when starting off in first gear. I've grown quite used to it if it is.

I'll vomit if i do another search tonight. Thank you for understanding.

Can we get an amen, brothers and sisters?

I do, too, Paul. It's starting to get ugly in the USA. Everyday more and more people are starting the lemon law process (similar to how you can reject a car in the UK), and the warm and fuzzy feeling many of us had toward MINI is now gone and is replaced by disdain.

Still waiting on a fix,
JS

Not anymore. The dealer installed rear fog kits did not make it in time for the month of September launch and therefore, MINIUSA has removed them completely from the car configurator (In the accessories section).

If you want rear fog lights, your best bet is to wait for a December 2003 build, at which point, they will become available as a factory installed option for about $100. It is not clear yet if the rear fog dealer installed kits have been pushed back for December introduction.

I was looking forward to get them installed in my upcoming 9/03 build '04 MCS but they are no longer available.

Is Brecht actually providing the option of reflashing with older software? They're only about 20 mins from where I work, but I've been avoiding them (their sales dept. didn't leave anything remotely resembling a favorable impression when I began MCS shopping). However I've been wondering how their service department is since it's the most convenient.

I've had my MINI for a year now and I'm 4 years away from my next one so factory is not my concern, I need the retrofit kit Which is supposed to come out this month according to Mr. Jack Pitney, President of MINIUSA.

I just realized it's kind of funny that there was a rally a few miles away yesterday since I was bored yesterday and decided to do a "lap" down to San Diego and back after stopping by work. If I had taken the 15 back up as I briefly considered instead of the 5, I probably would have passed a fleet of MINIs.

Although I just read a post on MCO that contained a mention of Brecht's service dept that makes them sound about as "pleasant" as their sales department...perhaps I've been right to stay far far away.

MINIUSA has delayed the introduction of the retrofit kit.

Still don't believe me? Then go to:

www.bridger.us/mini

For more info.

Based on many inconsistancies, I'd never take anything ASK MINI says as gospel, that's been reported on here before now.

Never had to use Brecht, so I can't comment on the service dept.

Sales were terrible I agree, hence I bought the MCS from NY!

I've yet to ask Brecht service dept about the ECU re-flash, but my understanding from MINI USA is that they would simply remove, send back to NJ, await return, and refit.

They're probably as capable of that as anyone I'd hope!

You did miss out on a great rally though....they really put themselvs out for us

Chris.

Paul, go to the MINIUSA site and then pull up the MINI configurator. The Rear fog lights ($100) used to be listed as a dealer installed option under the "Exterior" section in the "Accessories" node. They are no longer listed there, so that is why I tend to trust the information posted in the Bridger site.

I am not saying that MINI has backed out in offering the rear fogs in the US as a dealer installed option, but it seems that the kits are late and will not be available as previously stated.

Hope I am wrong, but not seeing the rear fogs listed in the MINIUSA site is enough proof of them delaying thier introduction.

I know, this is what I meant has been posted on here previously.

CHD,

Did these official representatives from MINI USA offer any explanation for this being a software problem - and yet some cars from identical build dates running on the same version of SW do not have the problem? I believe this is a real good question and I have asked it many times of BMW without any reply.

I asked many times for older non-stumble software and was told that was not possible. I also asked for a car that did not stumble - it would only be fair as I paid just as much as the next punter with the car that does not stumble.

BMW really do suck - is it any wonder Lemon action is increasing.

Nine weeks ago I was told a fix was just around the corner in 1 or 2 weeks ( this was after several other promises of "soon" fixes. I was dealing with the Mini USA Public Relations Executive in NJ. After nine weeks of not hearing from the "man" I decided to call and ask what was happening and why he had not bothered to update me on this fix. Well guess what - there is a fix in the works and they are real close - "should be available in a week or 2 so hang in there".

So there you have it a fix is due once again in a week or 2 - yippee. Yeah righ - I'm afraid I've heard it all before from these 1st class Jack@sses that have no idea what public relations are.

DS/W MCS 3/03 Awarded LEMON Status
The yoyo is deemed to substantially impair the value of the car - by the FL Lemon Law. 4/14/04 In the end the LEMON squeezed itself so BMW can suck the juice.
