Offline | Technical Information from BMW Well, I'm frustrated. All I want to know is what Version of the engine management software came with my car. Any dealer that I've spoken to indicates that there is no way of knowing this other than hooking the car up to the diagnostic computer and reading it out. Problem is that my dealer recently loaded V#36 and didn't bother to read what was in there first. I'm interested in reverting to the previous version but don't know what that was. You would think that by supplying a dealer with the vin# or production # there would be a centralized data base they could easily query to find this out. I mean how in the world can BMW even track faults and associate them with various versions, or don't they care. Seems like another example of a technologiaclly sophisticated product too complex for the mere mortals that are responsible for servicing it. If anyone knows what software was built with an October 2003 Cooper S or a way to find out please let me know Gene Cosloy |

Offline | I am not sure on software version on an Oct build, but whatever version it was....you dont want it! do a search on yo-yo or surge and you will find why they loaded v#36 Do you have problems with your S? What are they? |

Offline | Needed to rev high to take off smoothly in first gear and the well documented yo-yo effect. Since loading V36 first gear no longer requires reving to 2000 or over and is very smooth. Yo-yo however is unchanged. Also I am experiencing reduced gas mileage since the change. (May or may not be coincidental) Any way previous version is unknown to my dealer and I would prefer reverting back if in fact there is a correlation of lowered gas mileage and V36. Gene |

| MINI2 Regular | My October build 04 MCS has no stumlbe, no yo-yo...if I take it in for the rear fog light enable, am I going to get a v36 ? Will this mean I might end up being inflicted with one of those lovely problems??? /// The Kurtster /// ![]() UNION JACK OWNERS CLUB GB-0032 |

Offline | The usual policy on software updates (since they take labor and someone needs to be paid) is the customer needs to report a problem so they will use the update to fix it.. Your dealer might try and be helpful and do it, but as long as rear fogs don't require 36, you should be able to specifically ask to not have it done. It says somewhere in the rear fogs thread what version is required... Edit: CD 35 or higher is needed for fogs as per this: http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?p=521348 so you should be fine. Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball. |

Offline | AFAIK you can not revert backwards, this has come up a number of times in the past, especially when one version induced the cold start issue and the answer was always no can do, you can't undo changes, you can only go forward. |

Offline | Launch or lunch? I never really had a problem with launch. To me it just seemed to be a driver education issue (learning how to rev it up a bit before releasing the clutch in first). I of course am making no assumptions about others who have complained about the "stumble ". The Yo-Yo on the other hand is an annoying fault that while it may be an idiosynchrasy of the car is not capable of being solved by better driver behaviour, Even if my gas mileage doesn't degrade, I think V35 (if in fact that was the previous version) did run the engine a bit leaner and and felt stronger througout the range. Offline | My service guy at Mini of Peabody tells me that he has V35 and I can go back. Of course I could be the very first hombre who has requested this and until he tries it all bets are off. I'm still struck by the lack of information and confusion over an issue that should be well communicated by BMW to their dealers and by extension their customers. Very strange and suspicious. I still can't get anyone to answer my simple question as to what version my car originally was built with or even a pointer to the place where such information might be had. You'd think this was a crime scene. Gene |

Offline | How to determine software version. (Going from memory here -- I sold my S a few months ago -- so forgive me if this isn't e-x-a-c-t-l-y correct). 1. Depress the trip-odometer reset button. 2. While holding the button down, turn the ignition key to position 1 (accessory). 3. Release the reset button. The digital display will show you the version number. -- Jon |
