Thumbs down Front Sunroof Rattle Persistence- Anyone same boat? Exciting details to come!

The dealer has "fixed" this rattle too many times. It does not go away for any given amount of time. It's located right where the sunroof button is. I have felt tape all over the deflector housing. The dealer's "tightened the housing" and 'tightened some screws". I beg of you. If you've had yours fixed for real, PLEASE give me your dealer's name so I can have my dealer call yours. I'm out of options.

This is RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!

I would be especially appreciative to hear your story.

TIA

Had a small rattle in the sunroof, if you remove the black trim that goes around the sunroof (it also has the open close sunroof button and telephone mic grill on it) behind it you will find a couple of wires ckeck that these are not free to move about.

It was hard to pin point the rattle, but had done the deflectors like yourself. Got the idea from here when some one reported it fixed there rattle.

John,
Is the noise/rattle when the sunroof is open or closed? If it is closed, what has been used down here, DC area is using the soft part of a velcro attached to the wind deflectors. It has worked for a number of people down here.
If the noise is when it is open, as mine was. I finally had the dealership replace the "cassette" that the sunroof slides in/out of. The dealer had to special order the part. The dealer that I went to had said that they had heard of this problem, but not much info on it. This fix has worked for me thus far.

Good luck

Hi Paddy!

That noise was just rattlin on my drive just moments ago. With the sunroof open it is silent, but creaks back further. i can deal with that. The rattle is on with the sunroof closed and with the sunroof in ventilation position. I've got the deflectors all taped up with that fuzzy stuff. Well. maybe I should go balls out and absolutely cover them with the velcro tape. But is that a solution really? My next go round to the dealership i'm of mind to strip the deflectors of all their padding and let them start from scratch. I mean, how hard can it be?

hmmm.

GMINI,

Have you had a look at this link yet for suggestions on fixing sunroof rattles:

http://mini.uglydoris.com/archives/000026.html

I haven't suffered from this issue myself, though.

Thanks mitch. I've experienced that noise and have had it fixed. I've seen that method described before. Good to know the fix is so relatively simple for that noise. The rattle and buzz from the sunroof control console is a whole other matter.

I too suffered from the sunroof rattle/squeek. Only occured with roof closed or on tilt. Every week I thought the sound was coming from a different location. I put pads on the edges of the deflectors to no avail. At another time I thought it sounded like the glass was loose in the frame. I put up with it for a couple of months last summer.
Anyway eventually took it into the dealer who straight away said it needed a new cassette, this being the complete frame and mechanism, less the glass. They stated they had carried out this replacement quite a number of times with various customers.
The job was done a week later under warrantee and all is now fine, no noise, rattles or squeeks.
Incidently, I saw a copy of the dealers invoice to BMW Mini for the job - one thousand and sixty of the english pound notes, twice the cost of the factory fitted roof.

Mine is ratteling as well, but if I hold onto the Front Pullshade while i drive the noise stops. It "seems" the be connected to the pull shade. Anyone have this ?

It is most likely not the pull shade. Find the roughest road you can and test your theory. If it is the shade they will replace it, if it turns out to be the sun roof cassette, you wioll need a tech to ride with you so that they can actually hear the problem. That is how I solved my problem. Just like tumblewood said, they will replace it, if they can hear it.

Just stumbled on this, a new chapter of GMINI's continuing saga. JE, somehow I think you are surely cursed by nagging small (and some large) problems. My sunroof rattle was solved via lubing the track but then again, the rattle was aft on passenger side. Perhaps if we all pray....

OK screw that. The dealer has me waiting til march for the rep to come thru. Like the rattle will be nearly as bad in March's warmer climes - Not likely. So. I pulled the liner inside the sunroof. Wow what i can see in there. No wires but a bungee prepped one for the switch - unlikely noisemaker. I did it in the dark cuz that's when my freetime is.

My question (which will be posted on it's own if not answered here) is what those white plastic screw fasteners screwed up into the metal plate just above the switch housing do. Three of them and i suspect they are creating at least part of the rattle. As far as i can tell they fasten NOTHING. Fill me in please, before i yank then out (they seem not to screw out).

Cheers!

john

edit: yeah. They are likely causing a rattle (finding it's two part this rattle). However they are to fasten the sunroof liner back to the sunroof, so cannot nix them. The second part was addressed by yet more velcro tape under the right deflector.

Listening to the buzz behind the switch last night, I decided to pull over, pull the liner, and have another look. There was a light rattle remaining seeming to come from further behind the mounting plate I suspected. I fooled with the deflectors, pressing them down to see if i could hear a tap. Nothing. I closed the sunroof and carefully remounted the liner. No rattle no more. So we'll see this morning. Another winter day. I remember that opening and closing the sunroof had quieted the rattle once or twice in the past.

Has anyone have a problem with the sunroof on tilt - I get really loud rattle when ever I go over bump. It just sounds if the sunroof frame was loose. I'll be taking in to dealer for repair soon. Just wonder if anyone knew what it was.

Bugs the crap out of me everytime I hit a small bump.
