Blue Cooper Cooper Knackerd - gearbox and engine

My Cooper has done 2200miles. Ever since 500 miles (but perhaps always) its had a knocking noise/rattle coming from the engine bay. Unfortunately it only appeared after the car had been driven for a while and at low speeds mainly in 2nd.

As most of my daily drive is at 70mph and very little distance either end of the journey at slow speed, I wasn't sure if it was my imagination. Anyway at about 1700 miles I went to Plymouth to visit the folks. A good hours journey. I drove around Plymouth doing a few chores. My car did not sound good. It sounded more like an old bucket of bolts or a diesel - sorry One D owners.

I took it to my dealers in Exeter and the technician thought it sounded like an engine problem. The first they'd had. So it was booked in for a look-see.

So today was the day it went in. I got a One as a courtesy car. The moment I drove it away I thought, "Wow! That's much nicer than mine". The engine seemed a lot smoother, the gearbox much tighter and easier to get into gear. In fact it was what I was expecting of mine. Odd perhaps when you think the One with 1800 miles on the clock had probably mostly done city driving and mine was motorway driving. The other thing I noticed was the revs. My Cooper does 3200 revs at 70mph, the One around 2950. My Cooper does 3800/3900 revs at 80mph, the One around 500 revs less. I would expect the same as the gearbox is identical.

So has anyone else had dodgy problems like myself. And what revs to you get at 70 and 80mph?

I was expecting a call from the dealer to inform of what was wrong but no call as of yet.

The ONE is meant to have lower revs as the final drive ratio is lower.

Gearbox

Haven't had a knocking noise bu my Cooper with 20000 miles has been reluctant to get into 1st/3rd/5th making a worrying squeek as it does so. Obviously doesn't do it if I book it in at the Exeter dealers but it is concerning. Seem to be getting a squeek from a belt at tickover aswell even though I've just had a new fanbelt put on under warranty.

Try the guys in the Mini sales department as they can get info out of the polite but not very helpful service department.

Gearbox ok?

Our Cooper, also 20K miles, squeeks and sometimes feels notchy going into 1st,3rd&5th when coming from 2nd & 4th. Belt has also started squeeking. Behaved when at the dealer so they just lubricated under gearstick gaitor. Better but still there.

My Works has exactly the same problem you describe. Only really noticed it tonight. In second gear at about 3Kish it makes this rattling noise. I also have the problem of it being difficult to get into 1st. Not 3rd or 5th though.

It was acceptable in the 80's

I think you'll find the gearbox easier and lighter on the one for the simple fact it HAS been driving around a city. The amount of gear changes will be enormous as opposed to driving at 70 in 5th. Gear boxes do loosen up with frequent use.

Have you got this gear problem sorted yet? I had the same thing, took it to the dealers and the said that it is because of the linkage. Appaerntly they had to remove the battery and get behind there somewhere.

They did sort it out though

My 2003 Cooper does exactly the same - in 2nd at around 3000rpm it sounds like something is going to fall off! It's booked in just after Xmas to be looked at.

Well my rattling problem stopped. But the 1st, 3rd and 5th problem is still there. More noticable in cold weather.

My dealer said BMW are refusing to change any more units for this problem as the problem just comes back

So now I'm stuck with it. Wonder what happens if it fails completely. Glad I took the extended warranty

I wouldn't accept that if I were you! They must be changing them as they only changed mine yesterday. The new gearbox is worse than the old one though. The old one may have been noisy but at least I could select gears. Driven 15 miles with the new box and already had problems getting into 1st, but worse than that it keeps baulking 3rd to 4th. It's going back on Monday, but I'm trying to negotiate a buy back of the car with the dealer because of all the problems I've had since new.

Yes, but as I understand it it wasn't for the difficulty in selecting gears problem. Correct?

If anyone has had one changed for this reason I'd be interested.

England Low transmission fluid level

Be aware that my delear is recalling certain cars due to low gearbox fluid levels - might be worth getting it checked.
