Unhappy Gas Mileage

I cant seem to get more than 265 miles per full tank of gas. Has anyone else experienced the same mileage? Considering this car is only a 1.6 litre I was expecting at least 320 miles.

What MPG are you getting, I seem to be getting around 40 MPG on average, I guess it depends whether you milk the whole reserve fuel or not ?

well, I work on the following theory just like some other people on here

Fill it up....enjoy it and when it is empty fill it again !
Not really too bothered about the consumption although I do keep a log of it and I constantly fill my car up letting it go no lower than a quarter of a tank which normally means 220-230 miles.

Average consumption is 29mpg which I too think is poor for a 1.6 but as 80% of my driving is urban peaktime traffic I guess it is not bad and is way better than the 20mpg of one of my previous cars !!

First mileage check

Just did 202 miles and filled it. 60 miles were highway with the rest around town. It took 6.48 gallons. I did the math and got 31 mpg. I'm very pleased with this as I have found the fun that exists above 3500 rpm.

Are miles / gallons different in UK than US??? I drove my new MINI Cooper home from New Jersey to Ohio on Friday, computer showed 38.5 MPG (all interstate), and I didn't buy gas until Akron, Ohio (about 420 miles). And only needed about 10 gallons so wasn't near empty.

PS It took about 15 minutes longer than normal to fill 'er up ... everyone wanted to admire my great new car!

Silver/Black Cooper, that I drove 548 miles home on April 12 '02 (14th buyer from Morristown NJ MINI). My other transportation is a silver Paso Fino - Happy Trails!

Yup, our friends across the pond use the grandly named British Imperial gallon which is 277.42 cubic inches or 4.545 liters as opposed to a US gallon which is 231 or 3.785. Actually, even before I read your post I was going to ask folks to mention in these posts which measurement standard they were using. In some cases its obvious (i.e. someone whose location is listed as Stonehenge is clearly not going to be using the American gallon), but some posts don't have a location and I at least am not really sure what standard is used in Ireland, Canada, Australia, etc. I suspect Imperial, but perhaps the Canadians have been assimilated.

Smile One Mileage

Had the car out for a long run over the weekend - finished running it in.

Been getting 300-350 miles from a tank; and last set of figures was 38mpg.

My Cooper's averaged only 28.5 mpg (British) in its first 1,700 miles. Best was 32 mpg, worst 25 mpg. I'm disappointed with this and have raised it with my dealer. They tell me it's what they would expect for mixed driving at this early part of the car's life. They reckon it should improve to mid - late 30's by about 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

I'm sceptical. No car I've ever owned from new has improved to this extent. I hope they're right, though. I was getting 25 mpg average from my 323Ci (170 bhp 6-cyl). I expect much better from a newly designed 115 bhp 4-cylinder motor.

I was getting about 31 MPG from my MINI One at about 1000 miles, and now I'm on on about 4500 miles and I'm still getting 31 MPG. So, no it doesn't change. Although I took it 300 miles down to Cornwall a few weeks back and got 45 MPG mainly doing motorway driving.

D'you mostly do long journeys?

Best I ever got in the 323 was 32 mpg (worst - 22). If 32's your average, I'm impressed!

I do a lot of short journeys, admittedly, but it was no different in the BMW and I would have expected better than a 10 - 15% improvement in consumption with the MINI. Seems you're 25% up with your Cooper.

I'll have to try an M-way "brim to brim" check. I wanna see 40+!!!

Im letting the BMs trip computer run for say 3-4 months without resetting, I do mixed journeys, some long, very little town driving, that might explain it....

In relation to the MINI, Im starting to doubt myself now - my mpg is so high compared to all the other posts in here - its due a refill again, Ill recheck it, and repost the results asap......

I'm getting about 300 miles......................

Before the low fuel warning light comes on.

Averaging about 35 mpg, but don't get stuck in urban traffic very much.

Unhappy mpg

hi

my experience is in line with blazingmini's figure. i can't seem to hit 30mpg let alone 40!

dealer said it would improve after 2k miles. i'm at 2.3k now but though it has nudged up a little, i'm well short of the mfr's figs.

BMW figures for combined MPG of 42 or so is based on and average of urban and motorway/extra urban figures the reason most will never see a return of 42 mpg is because most people will not have bought a MINI to do exceptionally long journeys and motorway driving but for fun/enjoyment driving down country lanes and for nipping round town.

If you are mainly driving your car on short journeys this is always going to be the most un-economical return as the car has little chance to warm up and get to optimum efficiency. I have had small so called economical cars and gas guzzling BMW's but neither returned exceptional MPG around town.

I recently got a new job and work out of town (approx 25 miles away. I travel to and from work down a motorway and was getting around 26-27 mpg from my BMW 320i.

As the journey still isn't long enough to expect the MINI to reach its full mpg potential I will be expecting somewhere between 35-40 mpg. The Extra urban figures of around 50 mpg is only really obtainable if traveling the length of the country, which most will never do (atleast on a regular basis).

I will agree when you buy a car your eyes automatically go straight to the combined mpg figure, as impressive as it is most will need to create a new average between combined and urban in order to get a more realistic figure.

I have done this for you and the figure is 36.85 mpg this is closer to most peoples figures but is still only an average.

I quite suprised that most are shocked with there average consumption because just consider that the urban figure is actually only 31 mpg anything more than that should be a bonus.

The thing that seems strange to me about MINI gas mileage is the huge gap between city and highway driving. Most small cars seem to have an average city/highway difference of about 6-8 mpg. The MINI however is more like 15-17! Admittedly I don't know much about cars/engines, etc, but that seems like an unusually large gap, especially for a car that is supposed to be as "advanced" as the MINI is, with it's completely electronically controlled engine systems.

This is probably also why so many people are seeing such low numbers. The combined mpg numbers are just an average of the two ratings, but I'd imagine most people do a lot more urban/short-trip driving than highway driving. In most cars, this means you probably get pretty close to the combined number, since the urban and highway numbers aren't too far apart anyway. With the MINI and it's large gap, however, if you're actually getting closer to the city numbers, you're a lot below the combined numbers, which is pretty disappointing to most people.

I can quiet easily get 48 to the gallon in my Mini.
But if I am heavy right footed then it will go down, but only to about 36-42 MPG.

And No I'm not a Sunday Afternoon driver either!!!

Nothing beats a Mini

Howdya do that?

Just checked another tankful. 34.7mpg. (Cooper)

And that's with very little time in urban traffic.

1100 miles. Engine will loosen up, I guess?
