United-Kingdom Strange Noises

My Cooper has now done 4500 trouble free miles with two small exceptions. First there is an occasional noise from the rear - maybe twice a week. It's like the sound of a stone hitting the underneath of the car - a short but loud crack. Second, and on one occasion only, after a 4 hour drive the steering wheel suddenly started to creak on turning - it sounded as though polystyrene packaging had been left in the column. Next day the noise had gone and to date hasn't returned. Anybody got any explanatiomns?

yeh, the steering columns creak quite a bit i think. all the minis i've driven have had a creak in the column.

can't help you with the cracking noise though. maybe it's the exhaust rattling/shifting on its mounts?

is it something in your boot or in the seat-back netting holders?

could it be the air pump/jack under the boot floor moving?

could it be the rear seat belts knocking on the glass/trim?

just guessing!
