Offline | http://www.mini2.com/forum/faults-fixes/6799-gearbox-problem.html Check out the above thread. Also see EVO mag April 2002 (Long term Fleet section). What mods. had been carried out? Could these have done something - too much extra power/torque? |

Offline | gear box click Hi all mini fans. I have a month old cooper that has suddenly developed a click/clonk when I go into third and fifth gear. Obviously pushing the stick to right. The car has 740 miles on it and I love it. Is this just a new gear box noise? It was not apparent when I picked the car up. |

Offline | If the "click/clonk" noise appears to come from gearlever or directly below the gearlever, then it could be the linkage mechanism. This, I understand, consists of a kind of plastic "gearbox" and cable mechanism. This had to be replaced on my Cooper (at about 1,000 miles) after developing a noise similar to your description and becoming rather notchy and imprecise. Basically, something within the mechanism had broken. Now got 2,500 miles on the clock and no further problems with this component. As it happens, however, the gearbox itself was replaced last week in an attempt to cure heavy vibration felt when accelerating in 3rd gear. The new 'box is certainly better, but still not vibration free in 3rd - all the other gears are fine - weird! Going back to your "click/clonk", if the noise sounds more like it's coming from the gearbox itself (and possibly accompanied by some diffiiculty in engaging these gears), then it could be a syncromesh problem - there have been one or two reported gearbox replacements for this problem. Good luck. |
