Offline | How many steering columns have you gone through? About a year ago the steering column was replaced on my 03 MCS due to that famous "clank". Now the car is at 32,000 miles and the steering wheel has developed the same symptoms. This time, I can even hear a squeak in addition to the "clank", while turning it when the car is cold... I was just wondering how many columns I will need to go through before getting a problem free one? Are any of you on the 3rd or the 4th? I also heard that there was a new design for the MINI steering columns (e.g., upper and lower parts, etc), is this true? Thanks in advance for your replies! |

| MINI2 Regular | I went through 3 steering columns on my last MINI - which is actually what prompted the change to my new one. I didnt fancy having to replace one of them once it was outside the warranty period! Wish I had kept it though, this new one is causing me total misery - worst example of build quality I have ever had the misfortune to own... ![]() 54 Cooper, BEP/Black, Chilli Pack, ASC+T, SS+, Alarm, CD Boost, 16" FIN Alloys, Anthracite Headlining, Xenons, Multi-function S/Wheel, Driving Lamps, sh*t build quality... ![]() Now SOLD!!! Goodbye MINIs and good riddance.... |

Offline | The answer to your question is going to determine if I am going to keep my car or not... If this occurs repeatedly, it sure will happen after the warranty expires. I dont even want to know how much it would cost to replace a steering column and/or rack. I am planning to ask that same question to my dealer when I go in Monday. I am sure they wont know anything ![]() |

| MINI2 Regular | That was my main reason for changing - the chance of having to fork out not only for a new steering column but also pay for a mechanic for a day to fit it wasn't a risk I was willing to take! Just goes to show that changing to a new MINI actually turned out to be an even bigger gamble - and one I lost! Mind you, the steering column hasn't made any unwelcome noises yet - just about everything else has though! 54 Cooper, BEP/Black, Chilli Pack, ASC+T, SS+, Alarm, CD Boost, 16" FIN Alloys, Anthracite Headlining, Xenons, Multi-function S/Wheel, Driving Lamps, sh*t build quality... ![]() Now SOLD!!!
