Ireland Noisy Window Rubbers

Hi Folks,
I have very noisy window rubbers on both the drivers and passengers door sides. I was convinced that it was the seatbelt rattle/squeak that has been discussed here before, but now am firmly convinced that it is the rubbers. Every nuance in the road they groan and make noise. Anyone else with this affliction?

Regards
Gavin

Have you got Window Tints?
Sometimes that makes them squeek more.

Yes, I have window tinits. The noise was there before the tints thought.
On the subject of lube how and where is this applied?

It's a very common problem Gavin - a sort of "stick/slip" noise as there is no supporting pillar for the window. I just use a rubber lubricant on the seals every month or so and the problem's kept at bay. If you use a spray, put it on a cloth first - I had a hell of a job getting the overspray off my leather headrests first time!!

I went through many a coffee and a danish in the Owners lounge at the local reception area trying to fix this same problem.

At first they (BMW) thought it was a faulty ECU that was causing the noise. Then they realised it wasn't and thought it was the seal so replaced them on both the passenger and driver side. The seal change helped for about 1 week then the same problem. This happened several times in the end they investigated the quality of their seals.

In this period BMW stopped replacing door seals for the MINI as they thought they had just sent out a bad batch to all their dealerships in the UK. The investigation turned out nothing with the build quality of the seal and normality resumed.

In the end it turns out its a generic problem with the frame-less windows - which causes the "slip and slide" mentioned earlier. Whilst it actually only moves a few millimeters, the sound resonates and can sound like very bad chatter - like you get with an dried out door seal.

The dealer gave me some "BMW Gummi-Pflege" which is a thick grime which is spread on the seals. This soaks in and makes those door seals "extra juicy" for lack of a technical term. Because of the extra forgiveness in the seals, the chatter is absorbed more effectively.

One application of the stick of "pflege" was required and I haven't had a single peep out of the windows for over a year. I am so relived looking back as those windows were driving me crazy!

Do be careful to avoid rubber cleaner products that contain silicone as that degrades the door seal causing premature wear and worse chattering.

FYI Part number for Gummi-Pfledge is: B82.14.9.407.015 and would cost 4.85+vat.

Hope that helped

Looking for Gummi Pfledge

Folks,
I am looking for this stuff. I have tried and been told that it is no longer available.
Can someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Gavin

There was another option the dealer suggested (but the Gummi Pfledge was cheaper!) so.. possibly inquire as to what they recommend as a replacement?

A quick google shows that pretty much all of the BMW convertible world knows about Gummi Pfledge and its window chatting/creaking magical properties!

Could you try another dealer to see if they have any in stock?

My dealer did give me a tube of Carboflo(liquid teflon that does not evaporate), www.kspaul.de
However it does not seem to be working that well.
Thanks again for the replies.

You could try putting a thin layer on the window itself - both inside and out.. once it has gone up and down a few times, and left in the up position, I can only assume that all the bits that cause the rattle would be coated!

seals vs window alignment.

Window seals can just sometimes be noisy for no reason at all.
Replacements usually fix the problem, but if they dont, the window glass itself becomes the suspect.
Front door window glasses on mini are actually 'set' in order that they run up and down correctly.
They have to be set in order that they run up and down at the right angle. It's not a simple case of whether the glass goes up and down. The angular setting is important, otherwise they will quickly wear out the window seals by running against them at the wrong angle.
Look underneath the doors on your car. you will see two bolts or screws. These are the adjustment bolts for the angular adjustment of the window glass. If this isn't set correctly your windows will simply wear out seal after seal (correct name for the seals is door glass finishers) because they are leaning against the seals rather than simply running up and down through them.

Any rubber gasket lubricant /grease will do, you can pick it up and any auto parts store. Helped quiet my squeek just fine.

I used a bit of Autoglym vinyl and rubber care which seems to have helped, even though it is just a thin watery liquid.

Now, if I could just cure the vibration from the centre console......
