Initial engine lag in 1st??

Hi guys

Just wondered if anyone else has noticed this 'characteristic' with their MC? When I'm accelerating in 1st from a standstill, at about 2000 revs my MC behaves as if it's suddenly encountered some heavy sludge (it seems to hit some sort of resistance) and I have to really put my foot down to get her to move briskly. I always seem to get much better acceleration in 2nd. I've never noticed this with other cars I've owned...

Has anyone else noticed this or is mine unique???

The infamous "Stumble" problem. There's a whole heap of info on M2 about this. Sorry I can't be more specific, but if you do a search on "Stumble" or "Yo-Yo" and other key words you should find something

I was under the impression it was an ECU software issue.

What build date is your car?

Build date is April '04. However, I don't think it's the stumble problem though as it doesnt occur immediately from a standstill as if stumbling. It's only when it hits about 2000 revs the engine just seems to encounter a level of resistance that I seem to have to fight against by pushing her harder. This doesnt, for example, happen when I'm accelerating in 2nd.

I haven't experienced this with any other cars. It's just rather resistant throughout the whole rev range from 2000 upwards in 1st. It's just really frustrating. It almost feels as if someone's fitted some form of power limiter in 1st!!

I would definitely take it to the dealer and see if V39 upgrade will help/cure it. It helped mine, as it had a lag with a/c on and also intermittently would idle very low or even stall when I came to a stop with the engine cold. It hasn't had either problem since they installed V39 and that was mid December.

Mine is a June 04 build and it used to have the same flat spot. Then I took it for a drive on country lanes and thrashed it, keeping the revs as high as possible. The flat spot disappeared and has not returned Worth a go!

Are you sure it isn't the traction control operating? Does it happen everytime, dry or wet?

Wouldn't you see the yellow light come on if the traction was operating?

Symptoms sound very similar to what I used to experience in my MC which is also an April '04 build.

When I took it in for the 10k service they did the ECU firmware upgrade (muttered something about petrol cap recall) and that completely eliminated the stutter.

I am having the same problem. When you start out you have to give more gas and get the rpm's up for it to go. The next time I get it serviced I will have them check it out.

Intereting, mine did the same thing...a March 2004 MC. I ended up buying a Pilo Racing Coil pack and new plug wires...that seemed to get ride of it...
although, it makes me wonder if I need some ECU upgrade? Maybe I'll just buy the Unichip from Webbmotosports.
