Offline | Rear Brake "Clunk" MCS05 17inch Runflats I've had my MY05 MCS just over a month and racked up 1700KMs. Every morning when I reverse out of my parking space and gently apply the brakes I hear a clunking noise coming from the rear brakes. Move into first gear and pull forward slightly and again apply the brales gently and clunk go the rear brakes again. The clunking sound can come from both brakes at the same time or sometimes one slightly before the other. It sounds like the pads slipping around in the calipers and the clunking of the metal backed pad against the caliper fitting. Has anyone else heard this, is it normal? If you stamp on the brake it doesn't happen. I have however heard it a lot when gently moving along in traffic jams and it is starting to annoy me. I have been back to the dealer with this but they say they cannot find anything wrong (or maybe they could not hear the clunk and so did not look for it???) I have the standard 17" inch 8 spokes with runflats. Any ideas? TIA |

Offline | Hi We heard this noise for a while after we first got our Cooper (nearly a year ago) but haven't heard it for a while. I think the pads do move a very small amount (ie slide up and down ratherthan in and out) although they are securely pinned in place. I am guessing that when a bit of brake dust has built up the slight movement stops or is cushioned so you can't hear it. Our Cooper's done 10,000 miles now and it doesn't seem to have had any effect. Offline | I guess I'll just have to live with it and see how it goes. Just added another 300K and the clunk is still there but noly at low sppeds when breaking gently. Let's hope it goes in the long run. |

Offline | Brake Clunk I've known of rear brake calipers (MINI) being fitted 'under torque' - ie the bolts holding the calipers to the car are loose which causes the caliper to knock back and forth when the brakes are applied. Get it checked. Last edited by MiNiGuY : Feb 21st, 2005 at 01:18 PM. |
