Register of rejected MINIs

Would it be possible to compile a list of registration numbers of MINIs known to be rejected? Surely this would help everyone, except dealers trying to offload dodgy cars.

It's a MINI hearse!

I am not sure if this would be possible.

Firstly not all cars retain the registration number. My rejected car now has a completely different number on it as I retained the original number.

Secondly, the car may actually get fixed properly. By listing it, the dealer may expect to get less for it, so he will take that into account when dealing with the rejecting customer.Remember dealers have been fairly easy at taking cars back up to now. Its getting a replacement that has been the biggest problem.

Point number 2 is I know a slightly different issue. Nevertheless, it would have a profound effect on rejecting owners.

Vehicle History Database

I have heard of a service (I can't recall the name offhand but can look it up) which keeps a database of used vehicles by VIN.

For a fee (of course), they can provide the car's service and ownership history. This is useful for purchasers of a used car to ensure that it has clear title, is not a multiple-owner vehicle, has not been salvaged from a flood (a common used car scam a few years back), is not a "lemon-law" car, and lots of other good data that can affect the price and purchase decision.

A car's history can tell you much more about it than its mechanical condition.

If anyone browsing this thread has used a service like this, please chime in.

I can't understand why so many people think that dealers are so great. Losing a personal reg number is just plain sloppy and reselling a faulty product at a profit sounds wrong to me! We are all paying top bucks for our minis so excellent sales and service should be the norm. BMW dealers are making shed loads with the mini and only take rejected cars because they know that they can re sell them easily. You can bet that they won't be so keen to take a reject when the demand dies down.

The AA do one and so do Experian both about £35 - Provides you with insurance cover as well if they get it wrong / it is not rightfully owned by seller

Lemon Flavored MINIS

Here in the U.S., you can go to www.carfax.com and have a search done on a car's title history. It isn't foolproof, but it should indicate if a particular car was repurchased due to a Lemon Law claim. Since the VIN never changes, why not start a voluntary list here on MINI2 of VINs for "rejected" or buy-back cars?

Problem is one persons Lemon may end up anothers dream - I have read of and know about the extremes we see on this site but whether you reject or not depends a lot on what you are happy to live with or happy to have fixed

For example I would happily buy a car I knew had problems if they had been fixed better to know that the prob has been found and fixed rather that it waiting to happen - However that doesn't mean I would happily buy ALL of the rejected cars I have read about on MINI2 as I say there are extremes

So getting back to the point would a register discourage dealers from taking back rejects ? I suspect so after all it deters people repairing written off cars doesn't it ?

You're just after my podium position aren't you ? -

Of course not but if I was in the market for a second MINI I wouldn't rule out buying someone elses Lemon - Provided I knew about it up front

Is it likely that a dealer is going to tell you that a car that he is selling for £100 above list has significant faults that led to it being rejected. Get real
