Dead key?

I've had my Mini for two days now and one of the keys seems to have died! It won't lock/un-lock the car. Totally unresponsive... Anybody hear of this before? Will Mini replace the key?

I haven't heard of it happening on the MINI, it may be just a dead battery. If the key is really bad I'm sure MINI will replace it.

One thing, does the good key work when the bad key won't? The reason I ask is that in some areas with a lot of EMI, my remote key doesn't work. When I drive away the key works again in a lower EMI area.

Actually, the second key worked fine in the same location.

Now that the car is in my driveway, I'll check it one more time.

Can you start the car with the "dead" key? If so, it is just the transmitter.

The old keys had a battery for the transmitter. I heard that the new ones are rechargeable and are charged up by driving with that key in the ignition. If so, you'll have to use the "dead" key for a bit to get it charged.

The handbook will say what type of battery the car has.

Yeah... The dead key could start the car, but that's all... Anyways, I took the car in and they replaced the key and reprogrammed the lock codes for free...

They said it was a pretty strange occurence...
