DIY mini one d thinks its herbie

does anyone have problems with the mini one d.
i have had mine 15 months and have had a constant problem with it accelerating on its own and the biggest problem is that its intermittent !!

i brake, remove my foot from the brake, a tremendous pulling occurs from the front and then the car accelerates on its own. This problem is intermittent and so far the dealership havnt been able to find the fault. just to add insult to injury the run flat indicator has started joining in and going off when the car accelerates on its own.

anybody got any ideas as the car is dangerous when it plays up as it then wont let you brake down again as it thinks its accelerating. sensors have been replaced and 2 wrong codes removed but still no joy.

Im sick of my car going into the dealership and members of their staff taking my car home at night to try and get it to play up.

What gear is this happening in and does the speed level out or does it keep increasing. The Mini D does have a bit of auto pilot. It can get all the way to 6th with nothing but smooth use of the clutch as the revs increase automatically for each gear change. If you brake below these speeds and then lift off the brake again without another gear change (almost to the point of stalling) it will take off again up to the minimum for that gear selection ie 15 mph in 3rd.

If it doesn't settle and keeps going then I'm afraid I cannot offer any suggestions.

Hi and welcome to MINI2

Thats a nasty problem you have there. Never heard of it before.

It sounds to me like it could be a problem with the computer systems. Maybe a processor is malfunctioning when it reaches a certain temperature hence the intermittent nature of the fault.

Hope the dealer can sort it out soon. Keep us informed of any progress.

Thanx for the replies.
I believe that the problem is with the computer system and that is why the run flat indicator has started to join in the fun and games.
My car has started its 3rd week at the dealers and I'm crawling the walls to get it back.

Regarding the speed it keeps increasing and then the only way to bring it back under control is to try and bring it to a complete standstill and then resume your journey.

when it does behave this way it will do this 3 -4 times that particular day and then i can go for weeks without it doing it !!!

That has happened to me on a number of occasions, but I'm reasonably confident that it happened only when my foot was not centred on the brake pedal, but over to the right and connecting with the accelerator pedal.

When this happens, what happens when you press the clutch? Do the engine revs rise, and if so how much?

it does rev though i couldn't tell you by how much as I'm too busy praying that the car will allow me to brake again !!
Have heard back from my dealers today but they cant find either that fault or why the run flat indicator keeps going off. obviously must be totally normal for my car to accelerate on its own and to set the run flat indicator off at the same time.
And i thought i was buying a quality car, looks like il be trading Herbie in for one that stops when you want it to !!!!

The run flat indicator might be going off because of our up and down temperatures lately. May sound stupid, but it really messes with the tyre preasures!

Having your tyres filled with dried air (or dry nitrogen) will keep the pressures more constant.

Do they have this at Petrol filling stations? Your car would go faster with this in your tyres as well because it is lighter than air.
