Please Help!!

For a while now, I've noticed that in warm weather my '03 MCS makes a metallic pinging noise near the driver's side of the engine when the engine is under load.

I got a call from Midwestern Auto Group in Columbus, Ohio today saying that the gas I'm using isn't the right one. I should be using 89, so says the service manager. He says that's what's causing the noise!! Has anyone else heard of this? What should I tell him? Any ideas as to what the noise could be (I only use 92/93 gas).

Please please please help.

The MINI Owner's Manual specifies that you should use at least 91 octane unleaded gasoline. I have heard that some mechanics suggest using a lower grade of fuel, but I don't understand why.

Never go against the Owner's Manual, no matter what anyone from the dealership tells you. If they're willing to put their advice in writing, on company letterhead, then maybe take the advice.

Otherwise, stick strictly to the Manual. If your car is pinking or making strange noises, take it in for servicing immediately. Driving will only make it worse in most cases.

Good luck, I hope it gets sorted out! Let us know.
