Unhappy Problem Gearbox!

My MINI Cooper is a 2003 model. Its done just under 10000 miles with full service history. But it now has problems selecting reverse. Will a new gearbox help?

Hi and welcome to MINI2

What sort of problems are you having?

It is quite common for there to be a "crunch" when selecting reverse. It helps to put it in first gear before selecting reverse or to pause between pressing the clutch peddle and selecting reverse.

Is this what you are experiencing or something more alarming?

No there is no crunch when it does go into reverse. It just won't select the gear. Its as if there is something blocking the selector. The garage thought it was the clutch, and they replaced it. But the problem still persists.

Its going back to the garage on the 23 august for a bloke from BMW to look at it. But I'm still convinced its the gearbox selector.

Question

I don't mean to hijack this thread but as it's related I hope you don't mind..

I have an '05 model and always put it in first before reverse to stop it crunching.. My sisters '05 constantly just won't go into reverse unless you select neutral disengage the clutch reengage the clutch and then select reverse.. You know it isn't in reverse because if you try driving it makes a terrible noise and doesn't move..

Took it to the dealer today and they basically said they won't even bother looking at it because it's a known problem.. Personally I think the normal gear crunch that I get is the known problem not a gearbox that won't go into reverse..

I've had more or less the same with the loaner '03 Cooper I had. Often, it would not get into reverse, only making a slight grounding sound when trying to reverse. Depressing the clutch and firmly putting the stick into reverse again would then help. (But trying to do it firmly in the first place never helped).

Incidentally, my current Peugeot has developed the same problem. Maybe it feels it's going to be replaced by a Mini soon and tries to show it's exactly the same...

My Cooper always did this. Take your foot off the clutch and put it back on before selecting reverse and that usually works.

My brand new Cooper seems to "crunch" when putting it into reverse. I thought it was just the gearbox and clutch wearing in but tomorrow I will try selecting 1st gear before reverse and see what happens.

Tried that today and it seems to work. Certainly went in smoother!!
