(It's only got about 1700 miles on it)... I'm thinking I really need to bring it up with the dealership.. Stop the world, I wanna get off!!! |

Offline | What type of driving are you doing? If you have an OBC, record your MPH for a full tank. In my 2002 MCS I get 20 MPG or less when I average below 20 MPH in city stop and go driving. I get over 30 MPG in highway driving. |

| metal lord | i got 20 mpg with my new MCS on its first tank, i was driving it easy too, but it was city driving, but still seems offley low, i am trying my hardest with my second tank to get the best MPG possible, but after 40 miles the OBC says i am getting 20 mpg! i always look at my current mpg to try to make it so that it is as high as possible.. one thing that i notice is that no matter how light you are on the gas in accelerating i get bellow 20mpg during my very conservative accelerations!!! i think it is best to accelerate fast so that you can get to a speed that you can maintain, maintaining a speed at around 2800 rpms i am getting 35-40 mpg according to my OBC... |

Offline | On a flat stretch of road with cruise control set about 2500 RPM I've seen my OBC go as high as 44.3 MPG ... but my OBC calculates MPG as much as 20% higher than hand calculated MPG ![]() |

Offline | my 05 mcs gets 2-3 mpg less than my 03 mcs. Same driving conditions. Bad move by Mini to let the mpg go down. With a bigger tank I'm getting less total miles with the 05. |

Offline | I drive a 2005 MCS. I was getting 30 mpg on three tank fulls, getting about 380 per tank. I decided to try to see if I could get better mileage and started shifting sooner, keeping those revs around 2500-2800 at the shift. It took all the fun out of driving and my mpg got worse. I got 29 mpg. I said to heck with that, and went back to driving like I used to, shifting about 3200-3600 (when it "feels right"). I check my tire air pressure and make sure it is at 35 psi. I just drive reasonable and don't rive overly aggressive. I drive calm and enjoy myself and I'm now getting 32 mpg. I use a program call Fuel Log on my hand-held (PDA) to keep track of my fill-ups and gas milage. |

Offline | I would have been happy with 30 MPG. I have only been getting about 23 MPG and from everything I have read in these forums it seems nearly everyone does better. So like you I tried to be extremely careful. I keep my OBC on the consumption setting and watch it like a hawk and way reduced my RPMs. My mileage got worse - now only 20 MPG. On another thread I saw a suggestion that perhaps the chip needs to be reset. The reccomendation was to disconnect the battery for a while and then reconnect it. I have not wanted to do this myself because i don't want to screw up the service indicator etc. So I figure I will wait until my first service visit and talk to my dealer about this. |

Offline | Hey - Look at this thread that may appear to be unrelated - but I was reading this thread about someone who got a new chip and it was reccomended that he do a software reset. MartinSullivan gives instructons on how to do this. You will see that I then asked about whether this could help someone like me who gets low MPG. So far so good but it is still perhaps early to judge - but worth a try perhaps. Software reset |

Offline | It has now been two days and 200 miles after I did the ECU reset which I mentioned on the immediately preceding post. The obc on my MCS now reads 29 MPG and range is approx 400 miles. Prior to the reset I never got better than 23 MPG. |

Offline | Better mileage at higher RPM I shift between 3200-4000 in regular driving. Cruise at 3200-3600 in all gears and get 28-31 MPG. Straight highway is better but I don't do much highway. I only hit 6th gear after 65 MPH and tha's only if I will be crusing a ways. These engines love to run and you should run them. I run OB up at least once per day to redline or close, and exercise the gears. The sound is just too good not to hear on a daily basis. I have 23000+ miles and still love this car. |

Offline | I usually shift at 3000 rpm, unless I have some specific reason (the lovely sound, for instance) to hold it in a specific gear longer than that. I cruise as close to 2000 rpm as possible. I average 27mpg, and have almost since day one (30,000+ now). Hiway trips, at 65-75 mph, are right at 30 mpg. "I'll shoot for the queen, and you for, well, whomever." |

Offline | What did yopu expect. Everyone (OK, allot of people) was complaining about the gearing being too high and hard to launch from a stop so BMW/MINI in their infinite wisdom decided, for once, to listen to their customers and lower the gearing to make it easier to launch and offer slightly quicker acceleration. The consequence is lower fuel mileage. I think that everyone will just have to learn to live with it. At least until we can get BMW/MINI to raise the gearing again.Maybe we could start a letter writting campaign or a petition. ![]() I have always like the original gearing and wasn't particularly happy when it was changed. Offline | I have an '05 JCW. 12k on it and average 29mph +/- . OBC estimates 350 miles in the tank. I check milage with pen and pencil and the OBC mpg has been right on. Half my driving is highway. I usually shift around 4 1/2 to 5 grand. Around town I do skip shift. Town 1,2,4. On ramps and freeway 1,2,4,6. Not trying to conserve fuel. I'm usually speeding by the time I shift anyway. Highway speeds average 70 ish. Love this car! |
