Got quoted £830 with Mini Insurance, i'm 21 with 3years NCB. Can't remeber what the excess was, £400 i think. Thats a good quote considering i live in a very good area that is labeled with a scum-ville postcode! Stupid council bams have given us the worst possible Glasgow postcode, currently campaigning to get it changed.
When speaking to various insurance companies i asked if it was better to move house and they laughed and said yes!

Is it just me, or have excess charges gone up a lot recently?

As my motoring history has build me up some no-claims and with my increasing age, I'd been used to seeing the excess fall year on year - it was down to £100. But with the S, most quotes had an excess of over £300, and those with a lower excess were not remotely competitive on baseline price

Best I could do at 32, 7+ years NCB, parked off road, was £550 premium, £350 excess, via Fluxes.

Ordered my "S" August '01. Arrived July '02. EB with white roof, wheels and stripes, Chili pack, DSC and climate control. Hate those 17" runflats though.

Can now be seen all over the West Midlands, as a blue blur passing everything at speed

Do they charge you more if you fit bigger shoes?

Well, I think i'm protected if he gets stolen for joy-riding
He has, however, developed an annoying rattle and preponderence to pull to the left, but this may be because we have upgraded to a sports saddle plus with run-lame shoes.
Yesterday, I was pulling out the stable, and he just stalled - after several attempts of the whip we got going again, but he just kept surging and bucking like a yo-yo.
Oh, and we get strange smells just after delivery

The air-conditioning at 25mph is pretty effective though - in fact, probably better than in my car

Insurer's Approved or Recommended Repairers

You don't (ever) have to use the repairer the insurer suggests. You can use who you like, as long as the estimate is reasonable for the work involved - that's what your policy wording says.

There may however, be good reasons to use the insurer's recommended repairer:
  • You usually get a guarantee of a free loan car
  • The repairers chosen are usually reputable and will warrant the repair
  • Quite often the approved repairers listed by the insurer will include a franchised bodyshop but you might have to travel a bit further to go there
  • The authorisation process is usually quicker so repairs may start sooner
If your insurer's claims helpline initially suggests a repairer you aren't keen on, ask about alternatives. They usually just give you the one nearest to you, based on your postcode but if you prompt them, you'll find there are usually 3 or 4 in every major town.
