Relatively cheap insurance for a 17yo for ANY Cooper S is very unlikely!

I'd stick with the COOP till youve built up a bit of NCB. Its going to be hellishly expensive otherwise, and thats when you find someone to insure you!

Hey dude, I'm 19 with 18 months experience and 1 year's NCB, and the insurance on my R53 Cooper S is £2200 on a 10 month bonus accelerator policy with admiral, and that's with an excess that's so high i'll never be able to afford to pay it if the worst was to happen! I don't think you'll be able to find a reasonable quote at all, unless like the others said, you're made of gold!

The best thing to do would be to build up a couple of years' NCB on your cooper, then go for the S, good things come to those who wait

As a matter of fact, i did consider everything for quite a while before i decided to buy my Cooper S...
At first i planned on keeping my old car to gain a bit more driving experience and build up another year or two's NCB, but after thinking about it for a few weeks, i decided that i was mature and sensible enough to buy an S now and i'd saved up enough money to pay the insurance premium in one go so i thought why not? (After all, you're only young once, right?)...also, i have savings to cover about half of my excess IF the worst was to happen...maybe saying "I'd never be able to afford it" wasn't the best way to word it!!! (My apologies ) A better way, would have been to say "I would struggle to pay it". But yeah, i'm not stupid...and i drive my mini very very sensibly knowing that i'm very lucky to own such a nice car at such a young age

EDIT: By the way, i love the roof decal on your car, it looks awesome! Is it a custom one?

The cheapest policy I can find on an R56 S was £1900.

For when I'm 19.

Ouch!

I dont get the having a stupid excess that you 'probably' cant pay, or would 'struggle' to pay if the worst were to happen, that really doesnt make sense. Maybe its just me getting old

Hmm, that only works one way.....if someone drives into you with no insurance, methinks you might have to pay the excess whether it was your fault or not
