MCS Insurance - 1 month away from 25th birthday

Hi guys,

My MCS Automatic will be arriving in the middle of March, 2 weeks shy of my 25th birthday.

There have been some problems with getting quotes on the car for the following reasons:
  • Currently 24 years of age
  • 0 NCB - first car purchased in the UK which will be registered under my name
  • Car valued at £24K with Aero Kit
  • Resident in the UK for less than 4 years (but FULL UK Licence for 5 years)
  • They don't have a MCS Auto with Chilli Pack on their systems, some are quoting me prices for the old R53 model which I believe to be in a higher insurance band.

As I walk to the firm everyday and the client's pay for transport home after 9pm, I only plan to use the car for the weekends (trips around the country + Europe) and some night time driving, so annual mileage won't exceed 5000 miles.

Adrian Flux, Greenlight, Tesco and even Mini Cover won't insure me! I've got a quote form Bell/Admiral and Quinn Direct for approximately £2400+.

My question is this: Should I buy day insurance (£10.50 per day for full comprehensive cover) till I turn 25 and try to get a re-quote when I'm 'older' and when the R56 MCS Auto starts appearing on their systems, or simply settle with the quotes I have gotten since being under 24 really not matter that much (considering my 'unique' circumstance)?

Thanks for your help.

Something I didn't realise, until I went to register our own R53 MCS last week, is that MINI insurance can provide 7 day's cover FOC. We used this simply to register the car, but if you are considering paying for insurance by the day until you are 25, that would save you 7 day's premiums

Just ask your dealer and they should give you their phone number.

Tigger.

May '04 - Feb '07 R50, Feb '07 - May '10 R53. Enjoyed our time with MINI's, but ran out of space! Now Focus RS & Land Rover powered...

I saw this in my dealer too. Sounds good. I picked up the card and the number is 0870 010 6774 if Nephilin wants to give them a go..

But didn't Nephilin say that Mini Cover wouldn't insure him though? I'm with Virgin Car Insurance. It's great because is not extra charge for monthly payments.

My insurance has come down from £1000 when I first passed to about £650. Not bad! It'll got up by £111 when I get my Cooper they have quoted me. But then in August when I turn 20 it'll go down again, so that's not too bad!

Take out the Mini 7-day cover at first, then sign up to the cheapest policy you can find (even that £2400 one). As soon as you turn 25, cancel it (ideally cancel within 14days and you will get FULL refund). Now go and find a cheaper quote - you will save £££'s.

I did this when I got my MINI, was only 3 weeks away from my 22nd birthday, and the difference in price was huge (amazing how much difference 21 days can make )

Now I get nice fat insurance bill as my yearly birthday present from Direct Line

Well, I did check some time in December last year using moneysupermarket and I was given quotes of below £1,500 for a MCS valued at £20K, so didn't expect any problems until I actually phoned the insurers up. Apparently, they won't even come near me unless I was over 25 and had 2 years NCB due of the value and 'speed' of the car- it's not like I'm buying a F430!

I'll definitely speak to my dealer and ask about this free 7-day cover. Probably give Mini Cover a call later in the day, thanks!

Sounds like a plan! I'll check on their terms and conditions and make a decision pronto.

It's a lot of faffing around but I think definitely worth it. I would even consider parking the car up (without insurance) until you turn 25 considering the amount of money it'll save you over the years.

(Don't know if that's legal or not!)

im using temporary insurance companies at the moment....dayinsure, norwich union etc....i had no other option, wasnt even able to get a quote for a year!

problem is that these temporary companies only let you have cover for a total of 28days in a year! its an expensive way of doing it but i LOVE driving the car so i can justify the spend.

As soon as I run out of temp companies im going to have to pay my parents to insure the car in their name and put me down as a named driver...not ideal though as i really need to start building up some no claims!

That's a pretty expensive plan dude - think it works out to be around £3.8K a year? But I guess you don't have much of a choice if no one is prepared to "quote you happy".

My primary concern is with someone else hitting into me and causing a 'write-off' - that's the only scenario I'm not prepared to stomach. Therefore, I'm not too concerned with building up NCBs. From what I know, it only starts paying dividends after 4 years of NCB, and I'm only planning to work in London for another 4 years. I won't be able to reap the benefits, really.

I actually found the R56s costs more to insure than the old model (about £100 more!)

I used mini cover for 7 when i got my car, very easy, and free (minis quote was £1000 though! when adrian flux was £695)

When I sold my old car it was going to be 7 days after the tax & renewal insurance was due & to tax the car you need insurance. I had to get my old plate taken off the car before I could sell & the DVLA took ages to sort it. So I rang around and found that "More Than" had, if I remember correctly, a 14 day cancellation period

So I basically took out the cover, renewed my tax with the renewal note, sold my car and cancelled under the 14 day cancellation period without paying a cancellation fee. It was as simple as phoning up and asking to stop it! They asked why so I just said that I had sold the car & they were fine with it!

I then went with Adrian Flux for my Mini, you could go with More Than until you are 25 & then ring around. Have you been on confused.com and tried entering the start date of the policy after your 25th Birthday?
