Insurance group changes

Not sure if anyone has seen this yet?

http://uk.biz.yahoo.com/28022007/389/change-car-cover.html

The insurance groups are set to all change. Instead of being ranked from 1 to 20, they will be ranked from 1 to 50. Use this site to find out your cars new rating...

Hmm... group 8 on the current grouping system. Group 21 on the new one.

Is it just me or does this website not say when this is happening? Not that I'm too bothered - I've just renewed my policy at the end of January and it doesn't run out until the end of November. Even then, I won't worry unless my quote significantly changes.

No, couldn't see a changeover date anywhere either. Check out the Cooper S GP, up in group 38!

the changeover date is january 2007 according to the first page

From January 2007, the range of insurance groups will be expanded from 1 to 20, to 1 to 50. All vehicles that have a security "suffix", which covers the majority of cars from about 1996 on, will have been allocated an insurance group between 1 and 50. These new groups will be published alongside the 1 to 20 groups. The latter will continue to be published until further notice.

How is Group 30 out of 50 less easy to understand then 15/16 out of 20?

Similarly, how is this a surprise, the GP used to be Group 19?

I was just commenting. The new groups seem to be pretty much equivilant to the old ones. Seems as though most hot hatches, Cooper-S, Clio 172/182/197 etc are around the group 30 mark. The Lotus Elise series are all in the 40+ range. Most supercars don't seem to have a new group listed yet.

Cooper S going from 15 to 30 looks like a result! Our Range Rover has gone from 14 to 39

as you will see in scroggs post above most of the groups have a 'suffix' attached, the following is taken from the ABI webiste:

this illustrates the level of security fitted as standard to that vehicle. The level is group dependent and the requirements increase along with the group. (The higher the group, the higher the level of security required.) A further explanation of the suffix follows: -

A = Meets security requirement for this group.

D = Does not meet the security requirement for a car of this type and the group rating has therefore been increased. (e.g. A group 9 car where the security requirement is not up to Thatcham’s minimum standard for that group will be listed as a 10D.)

E = Exceeds security requirement for a car of this type and the group rating has therefore been reduced. (e.g. A group 9 car where the security requirement exceeds Thatcham’s minimum standard for that group will be listed as an 8E.)

(It will be seen from the above that the level of security on a vehicle could result in a two group differential between otherwise identical models.)

there are other suffix letters used:

P = Provisional - This is used in cases where the data for group rating was incomplete at time of launch.

U = Cases where the level of security for the model concerned is regarded as Unacceptable. This does not mean that the car will be uninsurable but consumers should be aware that individual insurers may insist on the security being upgraded before providing cover.

G = Import - Insurance Group Ratings are currently only allocated to vehicles built for the UK market, although our data will list vehicles that are classed as imports. These fall into two categories: - parallel and grey imports

for the cooper s 15/20 is 0.75 whereas 30/50 is 0.6 so looks better at face value. How insurance companies interpret the new system is another matter!
