Online Insurance & 10 month "accelerators" ???

hey guys,

its time for the renewal of my insurance and I've been doing some quotes online, some of which are good, others not so much so...... Now I'm wondering whether these 10 month accelerator schemes are worth it or are the a bit of a scam??

They come out a bit cheaper, and offer you 1 years NCB for just 10 months motoring, but does everywhere accept them or not?? Would I have to go with a company that does a similar scheme next time or have to stay with the same company even??

and are there any advantages to doing the quotes over the phone compared to online??

cheers, Ben.

i would suspect that these accelerator policies can only be used with the company who provide them (although i have no actual experience of them) in the same way with direct line they give named drivers no claims discount, i'm not sure other companies would want to accept it!

For me my cheapest insurance quotes for an 07 MCS were through direct line and tesco (insurance is underwritten by the same company so usually identicle prices)

Internet quotes usually give you money off compared to an identicle phone quote (as they don't have to pay for call centres etc)

I'm on a ten month bonus accelerator scheme with 'Bell'. They assure me that if I change to a different company that they will provide me with a letter stating have the number of years no claims. Without reference to 10 month bonus accelerator scheme. E.g I'm coming up to 20 months so will have 2 years no claims in the eyes of other companies.

I'm yet to test the theory, but at least in the mean time the insurance goes down every 10 months. So I'm happy.

Probably best to stear clear. Most insurers won't recognise a 10 month NCB, only companies such as Admiral, Elephant etc recognise them. So once you take a 10 month policy out with them, you're kind of tied to them.

This is not true... At least in part of Elephant who offer the same 10 month policies

They send you out the usual, as expected, certificate of No Claims Bonus every year which totals the number you have. No mention of accelerator bonuses at all.

I've recently moved from Elephant to Adrian Flux with 4 years NCB, 2 of which were on accelerators, without problem!

A very long time ago I started on the bonus accelerator scheme until I built up my NCB.

Never had any problems with them at all and now that my wife has her own car & policy she is also going down this route.

Ive had two Bonus accelarator Policys before and both now count fine toward my new policy with Adrian Flux, as mentioned above, at the end of the year, Elephant, Bell , Admiral will send you the proof of no claims form with you NCB on there.

The policy this year was cheaper with A Flux than Elephant so i decided against doing it again, But in general, for younger drivers if you have a cheap car you should do it.
