Cooper D insurance group

Anyone know which one it will be in?

Am trying to weigh up added initial outlay for Cooper D vs savings I will make running it, compared to Cooper

Ben, don't forget to factor in an enhanced resale value over the standard Cooper.

With increasing green issues the D will be worth significantly more than the petrol version in three years time!

I'd guess around a group 8, based upon similar power ratings on a smallish car with a diesel engine.

According to the ABI, the Cooper D will be in group 8E under the old 1-20 group system and 22E for the new 1-50 group system. By contrast, the R56 Cooper is in groups 8E (old) or 16E (new).

Why would the Cooper D be more to insure than the standard Cooper? 6 groups up on the new system, according to the stats you mentioned. The Cooper D has less power...

Me non comprende

Not being an insurance expert, it looks a bit weird to me too; the ABI site has an explanation of the factors that affect insurance group: The Association Of British Insurers.

The most likely reason is the higher initial cost. Would a diesel MINI also work out more expensive to repair?

Your dealer was probably wrong. It's down as 8E (old system) on the MINI web site too:
MINI - MINI Cooper D - Tech Spec

(The One D was group 5E - for the later Euro IV 88 Hp version)
