Thought would post on here in case this might of happened to anyone else?
I got stopped by the Police last night, as it came up on their computer I had no insurance.
It's down to me putting a private plate on my car and not informing the insurers!
I now have to produce my docs within 7 days etc, at police station of my choice, I have now updated my insurers with the correct Reg number
If I show both Certifiacte of insurances to the police will they let me off, or what are the chances they might do me for not having the correct plate registered with the insurance company?
Thought would post on here as alot of MINI's have private plates, thought someone on here might of done the same as me?
Why do they make your blood boil? If you have different plates on the car than the insurance company have for you you're probably completely uninsured. So it's good they advised you to get it sorted, for your sake as much as anything else!
if the date on the certificate with the correct plate on is before the date stopped you got stopped then you'll have no problems, but if otherwise you may have some explaining to do.. as technically you were uninsured..
EMPTY SPACE NEEDS FILLING....
but it has to be something that wont get me banned
You obviously have never had a car written off, or something even worse, by someone driving with no insurance. If you had, you might have something genuine about which to "make your blood boil".
I presume your think that, when their computer tells them a car has no insurance they should just say to themselves, "just leave it, probably an administrative error"?
You need to look at your insurance policy. Mine has a schedule describing the car insured and there is no provision that would void the policy if the registration mark was not correct. So I think you are probably insured.
However, your insurance certificate at the date you were stopped will show a different registration so you will have difficultly explaining it to the police. I think you may need to get a letter from your insurers confirming that you had cover in place at the relevant date. I do not think you will be prosecuted unless your insurers take the view that failure to inform them of the change of registration is a material fact which invalidates your policy. My own view is that this is unlikely but I know some insurers can be very unhelpful.
On this ocassion though it was not an adminisrative error, but error on my part that I completely forgot to change the details, In some ways I am glad they pulled me as they would of done the same with any other person on the road, and for the swines that don't bother to insure thier cars shouldn't get away with it.
However on this instance I hope they will see it from my side in that it was a mistake on my part and not throw the book at me as it were, I did ask the insurers if they could back date the date on the certificate to which I was told they can't, but they have offered to assist me in showing I did have cover for the car...
Sounds like you'll be OK. If you made a genuine mistake and admit as much, and show you were insured then I'd trust them not to "throw the book at you".
Went to my local constabulary today, presented both certificate of insurances. Officer there advised couldn't see any problem with this as it was a gen mistake.
I'll remember next time though!
