MINI One Bluefin - Insurance Cost

As you may have seen on my 'possible upgrades' thread I have bought a bluefin device. I'm with Direct line, I just wanted to know roughly how much extra I will have to pay to be covered, and do I have to declare the K&n filter, is that a mod? I'm 27, with a 5+ years no claims.

Personally I don't think you need to declare the bluefin as it is an undetectable device

Yes you need to declare both and will most likely be asked to declare a performance percentage increase. Only way you'll find out how much extra it will cost is to ring Direct Line and ask but I suspect it won't be that much more.

While it's "undetectable" if you have a chance to remove it, if you are involved in an accident where you're not in a fit state to remove it and the insurance company do a bit of digging (as they'll be looking at reasons to not have to pay out), it'll be fairly obvious ... especially if the Bluefin is in the car at the time! Consequences of having no insurance, especially if someone is pursuing you for injury claims, ain't nice!

There is some very poor advice being put forward in this thread

It is very simple -------

If you do not declare modifications you run the risk of having your insurance invalidated and thus you are then driving illegaly. Plus with no insurance you than run the risk of having a case taken directly against you for damages / personal injury.

You are talking about a PERFORMANCE modification !!!

Also note that there have been cases recently of insurance companies reading posts on car forums like this and using the information against the ''insured' person.'

In Italy

I wouldn't bother declaring it..it will likely make your insurance go up a LOT because it increases a mini one's power by a large %. Might as well get a quote for peace of mind though.

There are some very mixed responses on this! I would love to know what percentage of mini owners declare mod's on their vehicles to their insurance companies. Thanks for all your input!
