Mini Cool...

I am 21, I drive a cooper at the mo, I have one years no claims.

I want to change it for an S, the cheapest quote i got was from tesco, at £1800 for the year.

But being quite shocked by this extortionate amount, I asked the nice man on the phone what my insurance would be for a Civic Type-R, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear him say £1300!

So now what do i do?!?

Decisions...decisions...

Alex.

I am paying around £1800 a year (not sure of the exact amount as I changed car 1/2 way through the policy, but I am paying £150 a month).

I am with Tesco insurance.

I am 23 and have a clean licence and 4 years no claims. (was 22 when I picked the car up).

The car is garaged every night and I do 12,000 miles per year.

I don't mind paying high insurance but the £800 accidental damage excess is ridiculous.

For some reason the Chili pack was not on their system and I was forced to add it as extras. I am sure this affected the price.

Insurance costs more than the car

25 and in NYC - comprehensive insurance is going to run me, get ready, take a seat -- $3100 for 6 months! Thats over 6K a Year!! Thats crazy. Thats insane. Thats as much as the car.

You can take 10% off, if you have taken a driving safety course. Thats a clean record aside from a stop sign and red light 3 years ago! The insurance people said it'll get much cheaper in a few months when those old tickets fall off - and even more so when I turn 26 -- but its has to fall a long, long way before it becomes cheap.

After three years, I am going to have to drive into a wall and get my money back. Kidding . But you have to admit these insurance prices have gotten ridiculous, but what can you do?

Hmmmm this is interesting, I got a quote from Tesco, 24 with 1 years NCB and they quoted me about £1100 but I didn't mention anything about the options!!! Hmmm maybe I should give them a call back tommorow and see what they say!

This is strange, I think Tesco needs to sort itself out!!! I had a deposit down on a type R and then saw the light and put the deposit down on the MCS instead BUT! I did get an insurance quote and it was a lot more than the MCS! The reason for this and you can check it out, is that the Type R is group 16/17 and the MCS is 15

so you don't want to hear that living in the country, and having a somewhat clean record, only costs $600/year.

Guess I won't be telling my agent then

Or maybe it is because they already insure 5 more of my vehicles

2003 MCs - street go kart
1998 Discovery - street poser
1997 F350 - Jeep tow truck
89 Jeep Cherokee - lifted, locked, and loaded

OK Chaps, hopefully I have sorted a few things out here!

I phoned Tesco this morning and spoke to a lady to ask about if you have to declare the Chilli package etc. She said to me that you do have to tell them everything you have added to the but they DO reconise that they aren't modifications and that they DO come with the car. She told me that they DO NOT charge any extra for the packages and she even went through them with me just to prove what she was on about. I then phoned straight back and spoke to some bloke and asked exactly the same question and was told exactly the same thing.

I do know that some Insurance companies may class that as modifications but it must be only a few. Tesco understand all the packages and none of them will make any difference to your insurance. If you have been told otherwise, then I would phone them back and tell them or change your Insurance to Tesco or something! there cheap as well!

If you do phone Tesco and you get someone who doesn't know what they are talking about, then ask to speak to a team leader or someone who does know about the Mini Coopers. The lady told me this, but said all staff should understand the packges etc.

Hope this helps!

I asked Tesco about this, they said even though the CTR is rated as a group 17 and the MCS is 15, Tesco have their own grading system. They believe even though the MCS is not nearly as quick as the CTR, it is a more desirable car, and therefore more likely to be vandalised, nicked etc... than the MCS, but they are going to re-assess this at the end of the year.#

I have found that for young drivers, Tesco are by far the cheapest company.

Your lucky you got to speak to someone who new what they are talking about....sometimes, I am not that lucky I am surprised though, at the end of the day I am surprised they can do this......I can't remember the name of who they are, but apparently, the people who give the car its insurance rating do so for a reason! so if they have given it group 15, then thats what Insurance companies should set their quotes to. If they start chopping and changing Insurance groups then I think they are going to start losing customers!

Ahhhh I have sorted now, I was getting confused for a minute, I thought by your post that Tesco could change the insurance rating on the car, but all they can do is fluctuate the price!!!! personally I doubt between now and me getting my MINI that its going to change too much!!! I hope not

Sounds like a lot of you guys are getting ripped off. I'm 21 with 1yrs no claims and I got a quote from elephant.co.uk for £1035.00

Good trick is to try and add you mum to you insurance, don't tell her cos she'll want to drive your nice mini but it knocked around £150 off the quote. Also if you ever drive another car, perhaps your Mums/Dad's/Girlfriend/Boyfriend then say so, again I have found this usually drops the price too.

Hope this helps

Agree!

I'm 28 now, but previously always had my insurance through these, generally 50% cheaper than the rest. There a sister group of Admiral insurance.

Thumbs up Cooper 'S Insurance

Hi guys,

Just a suggestion, but you may want to give Axa Direct a ring. For the last two years they have been way lower than anyone else. I know that I'm a bit older and don't live in London, but they have quoted me £440 for the 'S' and I'm currently paying £280 for thr Cooper. I've just been quoted £714 by Tesco. They rate the 'S' in group 77 out of 100 and the Cooper as 72. Interestingly the Civic Type R is only rated as group 80 and the quote was only 20 quid more. Still know which I'll be getting though!

Hmmm I am sticking with what i have been told by Tesco! I assume you saying about Tesco grouping stuff as 77 for the MCS is group 15 etc. Thats what they told me and I got that info of one of the managers as its the Insurance is make or break for me whether I get this car. All I ahve been told, is the MCS is group 15 and I was quoted £1100 fully comp, 24 years old, 1 years no claim bonus and that the price would only fulctuate slightly. I orinally got a quote from Tesco on a Type R (Group 16-17) and was quoted nearer £1600. Maybe it was just the time of year I phoned up or something.

Not sure how old you are, but I am guessing with a quote like you have from Axa Direct, that you are nearly 30 years old or have a lot of No Claims Bonus because if you are under 25, they like adding a few 00000 onto the price!

Yes but are the options covered ?

As discussed in other threads, some companies will only repair / replace back to the basic car standard. I think that Mini Insurance actually insure the options - you pay more for the MCS + Chili.

Hence the Xenons on the Chili pack will be replaced in an frontal accident not back to the basic headlights as with some insurers.
