insurance & superchips

hi,
want to get my one chipped, but insurance goes up £500 for the stage 2,(30 bhp increase)!

who out of all you guys has told your insurance about the chip??
if you have bothered what sort of difference has it made to your insurance ( i know it depends on your circumstances)
£500 to me is far to steep, in fact it's f**king vertical
please tell me what you think cause i would love to get it done, and not to tell the insurance sounds great( but maybe not so great when im in court!)

They charge more because you can have a crash due to the increased power of your car and I'm sure insurance company statistics will show that this is the case.

As to whether you should tell them, IMO opinion you should. Apart from the piece of mind on your part it's not fair on other road users should your policy be cancelled if some modification were detected.

On saying that £500 extra sounds a bit much so shop around for a better deal.

When I was thinking about getting the superchip for my Cooper (just +8BHP), I was quoted an extra £150 for the chip - not too bad, as I'm 20 with only 2 years no claims.

But, saying that, I am playing £1400 insurance for a cooper

Tell them though - if some new technology comes along in the future that can detect chips, and you have a SERIOUS accident (knock someone down, write off an expensive car) you could lose everything, be paying back to them for the rest of your life, and go to prison.

Worth it for £500 (probably a lot less if you shop around - try Adrian Flux, they specialise in mod'd vehicles, whereas most insurers don't, hence the increase in premium - they basically don't want to insure you at all)? Don't take the risk, and enjoy your MINI more.

I agree that you should tell your Insurers. OK lets ignore the argument that Insurers are thieving gits and the principle of paying an equitable premium for an equitable risk.

Let's take the scenario that you are involved in an accident and are rendered unconscious. The accident was your fault and now you're lying in hospital. You have no way now of reverting the car back to standard. The Insurance Assessor views the car the next day and he has a hunch something is iffy. Maybe it's the modded nature of your car. He pulls the car in and checks and finds out that it has been chipped. Result? Well they won't pay out on your £15k MINI for a start. They will be required to cover third party losses and injuries. The third party drives a £20k Mondeo which your Insurers replace. They also pay the health trust £10k for your and the other drivers care. The other driver suffers injuries and suffers a permanent disability upon which £250k is awarded. Legal and other costs amount to another £20k. So that's £300k paid out so far. As your Policy has been voided your Insurers pursue you.

Say bye bye to your house. But I don't have a house? OK, Have an attachment to earnings order for x years and lose 40% of your income. But I'll make myself bankrupt? Won't work, you should have done that before the accident. If you make yourself bankrupt after the event the judge will throw it out.

I've seen a lot of cases like this when I worked for an Insurer. At the end of the day it's your risk and up to you whether you feel happy doing so.

There is just one moon and one golden sun; And a smile mean friendship to ev'ryone; Through the mountains divide, and the oceans are wide; It's a small world after all.

I so agree with the above. I have a mate who is an insurance loss adjuster and they are well aware of modded MINIs - in fact as soon as they see a MINI One that looks a bit non-standard alarm bells start going off. Oh and the chips are not undetectable - whatever the companies that sell them claim. The slightest whiff that you lied on your proposal form and they just dig their heels in and refuse to pay out. £500 is a lot mind.

Chip manufacturers may tell you that their modification is un-detectable to the dealer, but it will not be un-detectable to the insurance assessor!

There have been loads of threads on this site where people have said things like "the insurance co. will never know" or "modifications like air filters don't matter"....

Yeah you may think insurance companies are money grabbing 's etc!!!
...and I may agree with you!

but you really have to be honest with these people otherwise you won't win.

At the end of the day, insurance companies are a business and if they can get out of paying for your accident, they will!

Thanks DietCokePlease for your view,

I'm actually quite scared by that scenario.....anyone else?
