| Thats always an option but your best bet is to just bite the bullet and insure it in your own name. The Mini One D is only a low insurance group anyway isn't it. If you phone around you will definately get it less than 2.5k. When I was 17 I paid £1200 on a brand new 206, buitl up my no claims and now pay £800 on a Cooper, just turned 20. Phone around and you might be surprised, especially try Tesco and also give www.confused.com a try. | Jason, Just bear in mind that if you do use your parents no-claims and then stuff your motor, they will loose the no-claims bonus, regardless of who was actually driving. I think a lot of people forget this when they see the difference in price. Plus I think you need to be careful about who you tell this to as legally, the main user (in terms of mileage) has to be the policy holder. Having said that I do feel for you having to pay those kind of premiums - that seem to have gone mad in the last couple of years. Cheers |

Hi Jason, I'm 19 and have not had my new MC very long. I insure with Direct Line, and they would not give me insurance on a new MINI until I had turned 19. I checked with the dealer to see why some insurance companies won't insure under 19's, and he had no reason why they should not. Let me know how you get on. Richard |

| I'm hoping to be a new driver at the end of august if i pass my test. I so want a mini! I did a bit of speculative quoting for insurance. Why on earth is a 1.6 One Group 5 £100 cheaper than a 1.4 One D Group 4? It came out at £1050 for me in a one D and £950 in a One. All seems a bit freaky to me. :/ |

| i know! insurance companies work in strange ways. the one-d is meant to b insurance group 4 which should be cheaper than the one's group 5 but i'm sure they have their reasons. maybe that it's a more expensive car to start with than the one. j '06' Cooper S Convertible - Astro Black, '04' Mazda RX8 231 - Black |

| I got my first car for my 21st Birthday and it is a DS/W MCS and Direct Line wouldnt even entertain the thought of insuring me before I was 21 although I had been driving for 4 years but still had no no claims. Therefore, it is better to start building your own no claims early as you can. I have my MCS insured through a company of my parents now which suits me. :-) 210bhp JCW MINI Cooper S (S950) |

| Just noticed this thread (don't mean to go digging up old stuff) but thought i might be able to offer some insight into how insurance quoting works (from my experienced) Now days insurance 'groups' are a basic guideline for end users and not the insurance companies. Generally speaking a lower insurance group will mean cheaper insurance however there are a number of 'other' factors which are involved when you get a quote (without going into too much detail); for instance take a Saxo (any model) for a young driver to get insured on one it will cost an arm and a leg! well, alot more than that of a comparable small hatch model from another manufacture! In the case of the MINI D being more expensive than a ONE you'll find that its due to the D being quicker than hte ONE, take into account your age and your sex and the cost all soon adds up ![]() I've just recently took insurance on on my MCS (see signature for pic) and i used Tescos, I'm 22 with and the they were the cheapest which came in at £1,980 thats with no NCB (don't ask!) and not an entirely clean licence. But the way I figure it is, we only live once! right |

| I didn't realise the MINI One D was quicker than the One. Anyway, I would go under your mum or dads name until you get to about 19, then start your own premium. I mean its easy for people who pay about £500 a year to say go under you own name, and "really its illegal". Insurance for 17 year olds take the ****e. Don't let them jip you so hard. I would rather burn my money than give them that much for insurance on such a low group car. It just aint right. Play the system so that you save as much $$$$ as possible. If you do that you will save so much money. Obviously if you go under your own name you will have your own no claims bonus but you will have paid many thousands to get it. Age changes your premium more than no claims bonus. Wait till you are younger for your own insurance, that is the right thing to do |
