Insurance in the USA ... What rate did U get?

Just called my Geico Insurance ... Even though they don't have the car listed in the database yet (one week before the sale starts?!?!?!) .. the lady was nice enough to give me a qoute on the car.

I am looking at around $1800 a year for full coverage here in NY ... almost double what I am paying for just liability on a 1990 Buick I know have.

I still think it is not bad, considering the sky high rates here.

What have you guys found?

It all depends

NationWide told me they would price based on vehicle cost. I forget the total, but it was $90 more then my 95 Miata. Basically, the same. Now, once they have some information about accident and injury rates, they will adjust it "appropriately". Who knows what that will be. I guess it will depend on how we all drive, how well DSC help to avoid those surprises, and how well those six airbags protect us.

Yesterday evening I went to see my Nationwide agent, but unfortunately based on the VIN I gave to her MINI was not yet in their system.

She quoted me $413 per 6 months for a Cooper, based on the BMW 318ti (well, the old one as BMW is waiting for the all-new version )

Geico does have the car listed in their database. Have the agent look under BMW. Apparently, some businesses are not aware that it actually is a seperate brand name yet. My price quote was very reasonable from Geico.

Well, what was your price quote from Geico (if I can ask that question)?

We tried looking under BMW, but there was nothing there.

It definitley pays to shop around. The first quote that I received was by far the highest. Also, none of the five insurance companies that I've called, have heard of the MINI! 41, no commute, no convictions in last three (some wanted last five), 9000 miles/yr; Cooper S, per 12 months:
GEICO - $1,800
Progressive - $1,300
Allstate - $1,200
Nat'l Merit - $1,000
PEMCO - $850

over 50? then go AARP

Just called AARP to add my MINI to my current policy
51 years old
clean record
3000 miles per year
Garaged
$366.00 per 12 months!!
Finally a benefit to getting old!

Only thing is, they didn't know what a MINI was yet.
So my quote might get revised............
At $366.00 it's still higher than either of my other 2 cars.

My actual cost turned out to be less too:

Original quote 430/6 months

Actual cost 350/6 months

(daily driver - 15,000+ miles/year)

I must be some sort of huge liability... Liberty Mutual (daily driver) $1390/year.

I guess I'm paying for the 80% of people in Miami who don't have insurance (or driver's licenses for that matter)...
