Young Drivers insurance problems

Hiya everybody, I have my test this week, and if I pass (touch wood) I would love to buy myself a mini. What I want to know is, is that going to cost me an arm and a leg (insurance wise). I have been wading through online quotes and the best I could find was from egg, at £1,800 ish. That was for a mini one, 2001, kept on the street, for an 18 year old with no ncb and holding a licence for less than a year. Am I likely to get anything better than that??

Btw, I have been offered a £7,500 premium in my search

Assie

Hi,

Best thing I could recommend is get someone else to be the holder of the insurance policy that has driving experience - they also may (or may not) be eligable for NCD. Thats what I did between 17 and 21 then it came down to a slightly more sensible level so now have my own policy.

Cheers,
Dave

I was in you shoes at on point. The best thing to do is the following:

> Pass your Test (Be Calm about it - relax)
> You Must do you Pass Plus to Save Money (I saved £800 just becase I did Pass Plus)
> Phone Chirchill 0800 200 300 and say Immediatly That your 18 yrs old but you have done your Pass Plus. (If you dont do your pass plus don't bother phoning Chirchill as they wont insure you).
> Put your mum or dad on the policy (This may save you money - I saved £30 when I added my mum on to the policy because she it an old mere)
> Let me know how you went on!!

Hope this will help you

Hi Assie

Fingers crossed for you passing your test - GOOD LUCK

I already had my MINI ONE by the time I went to take (and pass) my test but my mum was driving it around at that time (it was torture watching her drive it )

Ive been with MINI Cover for over 2 years now (1 year as a provisional driver and 1 and a bit with a full license). They've been good to me up till the other day (read my"£120 to Insure Some (Good Looking) Plastic" post for more info.) But if your not going to mod your MINI in any way, which is probably advisable at least for the 1st year then theyre pretty good in terms of what they offer you!

However, MINI Cover are certainly not the cheapest out there and your quote of £1800 from Egg sounds pretty good to me - MINI Cover wanted to charge me £1900 and I've been driving with them, like I said above, for over 2 years without a claim!

I myself am on my mums policy with MINI Cover as a named driver and my premium is around £530 without mods declared and about £650 with mods.

Anyway, hope I've answered any questions you might have if not let me know

Best Of Luck with your test mate - I ended up talkin about MINI's to my examiner for the entire test as his son had just bought a Cooper S Let us know how you get on

Pat

Thanks guys for you advice and encouragment. The first hurdle is my driving test, so if you dont hear anything, you know what's happened!! I'm definatley going to be taking the pass plus course, it makes sense to. I'm looking forward to getting my mini now. I'll keep you all posted!!

Hi Assie

One thing I should add is about the Pass Plus. If you're ganna be the main driver on your premium for the first year you're drivin then fiddle about with online quotes to see how much difference it will make - it will probably make a fair difference.

However, if, like me, you're ganna be a named driver then its not worth spending £100 on, as in that situation it will make very little to no affect.

Anyway, good luck once again

Pat

YAY... Guess what, I passed. Passed yesterday, sorry to take so long getting that to you. I nearly didn't pass thanks to an idiot on a dual carriageway. Thankfully the examiner ignored that, but that stories for another day! Well, i'll keep you updated on my mini search and insurance fun. : Next step, pass plus (and yeah, I will be the main driver).

See you all soon, Assie

Congratulations!!! Fantastic feeling isn't it? I passed my test quite recently, and did a Pass Plus and it has made a massive difference to the insurance quotes I've been getting. Norwich Union Direct, who are really competitive anyway, have offered a 48% discount!

Here's to many happy years of safe MINI adventures!!

Congrats on passing the test....Oh to be young again!! Just out of interest ,did you try Direct Line insurance.I know i may be 36 with full no claims(about the only advantage to getting older)but they were very reasonable.I went from a Daewoo Matiz to my MINI One .Matiz was group 2 ,800cc 4 door, approx £7000 .MINI One is group 5 1600cc two door and cost approx £12500 with my specced options....the difference fully comp for the year was £20 quid.Irrespective of age or NCB surely this will be comparative. They told me that i would have to list the alloys(17"s spokes) and my roof spoiler despite my protestations that they are factory fit options.Despite this there was no difference in cost and at least those options mentioned are listed on my policy

Thanks guys,
I just got my licence through the post this morning. A lovely shade of pink.

I tried direct line (online). They offered a premium of £1,900. £1,100 with 1 years NCB. Surprisingly, the offered the same for a matiz similar to the one you described zyo.

I also tried Norwich Union. They offered a premium of just over £4,000. I'll give them a call when I get my Mini I think.

Thanks again,
Assie

congrats on passing your test

i'm 18 also, and my/our MINI is insured in my mum's name, with me and my bro as named drivers (but my brother hasn't passed his test yet... thank goodness )

anyway we're with direct line, and it's less than £1k with 1 yrs no claims (mum is an ex company car driver), so not too bad at all (well, all things are relative of course... )

btw anyone know anything about the legality of policy holders/named drivers and the amount you can drive? atm my mum and i drive the car equally as much but i expect in the future i will drive it more... will i have to be made policy holder or not?

So if you see a crazy guy waving at you in your mini in the northampton area, it's just a mini owner wannabe!!

p.s I have taken the pass plus course, and am waiting for my certificate. How long will I be waiting??
