MINI + Insurance=BMW

Got a little more serious about buying a Cooper the other day.I took another test drive in a Cooper S(next week will be a Cooper)and decided to find out how much the insurance would be.Since I pay the bill in person, they can give me a quote real fast.I know that BMW is tryig to separate itself from the MINI line so the car will sell on it's own merit.I found out it's not as separate as I hoped.I asked the very frendly underwriter to look a 2002 MINI."Not in there"he says. How can that be,their selling the car,you have to be able to insure it.He askes me who makes it(wait for it)and I say BMW.What do you know, there it is.Allstate consideres the car a BMW.BMW car,BMW premiums too.In Philadelphia, the premium for the Cooper will be $2647.00 a year, for the S,$2724.00.A BMW 325Xi would run me $2590.00 for the year. Not what I was expecting.Motoring comes at high price in the eastern United States.

My quote from Allstate was about $520 a year. Northern California, 38, married, mutiple policies and one minor argument with a concrete pillar. Actually, my quote seems so far out of wack with everything else I've read here I wonder if my insurance guy made a mistake.

oilman, I think you should shop around. We are paying $951.80 a year at 26 & 27 years old with a speeding ticket or two. We go through State Farm. Our underwriter never could find a listing for the Mini, so they based it on the price of the vehicle.

AIG also seems to have reasonable rates on the new MINI, for what it's worth. Their web site doesn't have the MINI listed, but you can phone them on their toll free number (listed on the web site), explain that they don't list the MINI (i.e. get the Internet rate), and get a quote. They do provide combined single limit (CSL) insurance -- for example, $300,000 per person and $300,000 per accident liability.

Yesterday I stopped by and spoke with my Nationwide rep who is great and very helpful. Guess what, still no MINI in their system!! I don't understand why they didn't have it but whatever.

Based on price, she estimated 375/6 months for the Cooper and around $1400/6 months for all 4 of my vehicles, no tickets and no accidents, 28 yrs old, married (okay, engaged ), homeowner's insurance also.

I've called a half-dozen companies, and until this week, none of them had a listing for the Cooper (apparently, they guessed, based on the replacement value). 41, single, one claim in last five, one ticket in last five. The quotes I've received for S:
Allstate - $1200/yr
GEICO - 1050
PEMCO - 821
Nat'l Merit - 1000
Progressive - 1300
Gen Elec. - 900

Having been driven round Mexico City both by taxi drivers and by a local girl, I think you got a good deal there. I guess it must be safer than it looks, or feels...

From just sniffing around it looks like the rate will be about $1,500 a year in the Philadelphia Suburbs. Check your deductables, which in this area should be at least $500 and better yet be $1,000. Check how you are covered for Stacked UM and Stacked UIM. In Pennsylvania it is best for your tort amount to be the state required amount and have a seperate excess liability policy.

The big problem in the Philadelphia area is the uninsured cars in the city. These add about $800 a year to the insurace cost, more if you live in the city.

Insurance costs

You guys get the cheap petrol (sorry, gas). Perhaps we score better on insurance costs.

My Cooper was £260 ($374) for 12 months.

Over here; Mini do a 'top-up-insurance' policy; where for 2.25% of the total purchase price any total loss or theft payout is made up to the CURRENT cost of a brand new car for the first three years.

Do your dealers offer this policy?

When I posted this thread,I couldn't remember the exact quotes that I recieved,so I low balled the numbers a little bit.The actual prices are $2745 for the Cooper, and $2915 for the Cooper S for a year.I live in Philadelphia(city) and the premiums are for a $500 deductable.Raising the deductable to $1000,lowers the premium by $250 a year. The agent didn't have to estimate the number's,the MINI is in the Allstate computer's,but under BMW.Ask your insurance company to look under BMW,this might explain why they can't find it listed under MINI.

I've gotten online quotes from 2 companies, Progressive and State Farm.
I'm 25, no accidents/tickets, live in LA county, so. California, single, 40 mile one-way commute. Thses are for minimum coverage with $250 deductibles.

Progressive: $1130.90/6 months
State Farm: $637.08/6 months

Hmm, bit of a difference there....of course, I haven't even checked with my current carrier yet, hopefully they'll beat both (unfortunately they don't have an online quote generator). Right now I pay $800 a year, but I know it will go up quite a bit because a lot is going to change (new car, new county, new commute, no multi-car discount, etc)

The Geico rep. I spoke with couldn't find it in their system so they based the quote on the car's stats and came up with $714/6 mos for the Cooper S alone or $1016/6 mos if I make it my second car. I'm male, 36 with a clean record, Geico's carefull driver credit and defensive driving course. The reality is that none of the insurance companies have any data on the car or who's driving them so they are just guessing right now.

Longterm Amica policyholder. My rep had never heard of MINI, but the car is listed in their system (as a MINI, not a BMW). I'll be paying $739/year for full coverage, with very high liability, on my Cooper. Receiving multi-car discount, car is not listed as my primary vehicle, mid 40's female with good driving record, northwest Ohio. Amica is not a well known company, but they are always rated extremely high in customer service. I recommend them.

Silver/Black Cooper, that I drove 548 miles home on April 12 '02 (14th buyer from Morristown NJ MINI). My other transportation is a silver Paso Fino - Happy Trails!

If you qualify (military service), USAA is the highest-rated and lowest priced insurance available in the US.
My single experience with Progressive, getting hit by one of their insured drivers, would alone convince me to run, not walk, the other way. Looking at the premiums quoted here just doubles the opinion.
