Norwich Union trials "Pay as you drive" insurance...

Where does it go from here?

Quote: Originally Posted by Norwich Union website

Norwich Union believe this represents a major breakthrough in the calculation of fairer motor insurance premiums and ultimately gives you greater control, flexibility and choice.

The black box device measures vehicle usage and sends data directly to Norwich Union using similar technology to that used by mobile phones. You could be billed monthly and the technology will also allow us to offer you associated in-car services, such as emergency assistance and real-time route planning.

The initial response to our announcement of "Pay As You Drive"™ insurance has been overwhelming. We're set to receive even more than the required number of volunteers.

Over the next few months we will communicate with everyone who has registered their interest to take part in this exercise. We'll let you know whether you have been successful in selection for the next stage, if so, you'll receive more information about the pilot scheme, and have the option to participate.

Anyone else see a problem with this?

Yeah - wonder if it automatically doubles the payment for every mile an hour over the speed limit you go!

Yep, I wouldn't have it. my reason would be a: invasion of privacy, and secondly, what are they doing with that data they collect on you, even they don't seam to know. I have a pay as you go Oyster card and that they gets swapped once a quarter for a new unregistered one.

Just coz I'm paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't out to get me.

.

Now, isn't "overwhelming" such a vague word. Do they mean protests, complaints, or positives?

Big Brother strikes again

And Paul, yes - overwhelming is vague and relative to what? Last nigth local news did a feature about Anglian Water offering bottled water to customer in Cambridge so they can stock up in case of an emergency ( on the back of this government terror leaflet thingy ) Cost was 20p a litre, not bad, delivery was £10 But the response from Customers ....... "has been overwhelming! We've already had 30 or 40 enquiries" 30/40 ......... enquiries ..... overwhelming what did they expect then for it to be overwhelming , 10 maybe 20 ...... good business plan there

I don't like the idea, someone being able to tell exactly where you were and at what time, and even wht speed and direction you were heading!!! It scares me, it's all too "Big Brother" for me.

Be good to use once we figure out how to make it "work", but not actually be in your car.

Not that I would suggest such a thing.

These things just seem to open up a whole new way of conning the system, which will make it more expensive for everyone. And I wonder who's paying for this technology in the first place? Anyone's premium gone up lately?

So what happens when the car is stationery at nite and it gets nicked??

What happens when you are driving through a higher risk postcode area...

I dont really understand the logic behind what they are trying to do here.... Sounds like a toll idea whereby the rate you pay will increase dependent on what area the car goes into.....

I dunno, perhaps I'm a bit thick, then again I dont like Norwich Union very much we had our last car with them and when we swapped it for the MINI they wouldnt insure it cos it was 'too much fun', we couldnt understand anything they ever said on the phone to us, and the premiums were never that cheap.... Quote me happy, my !

The worrying thing is that if the trail is considered an 'industry' success then we may find that it is forced on us, or that 'normal' primeiums will go up quiet consideriably.

I can understand the thinking behind it, i.e. if you mainly travel on motorways then it should be cheaper, if you travel in dense urban areas then yes there is more chance of an accident (or S-Lites being knicked!). But I still think there has to be a limit on information obtained from us.

I would only get one (unless forced to by my plod!) if it literally transferred the details of my whereabouts and nothing else, no speeds etc.

They will be trying to put a black bax (card) into the ID card next!.......must sleep!

Tom

0 days to go....lets drive!!!
CAN YOU TELL WHAT IT IS YET!!!!
