Talking Stuck Passenger Window

Hi

Can you give me any info about sticking passenger windows?
My car is an 03 CVT and has stuck twice. The passener window, only.
You can press the toggle, hear the click, and nada.

Next day it's fine.
Weird.

I have spent an hour searching through archives, but no new ideas.
Anybody?

Thanks,
jafes

This is a typical BMW design flaw, and I know quite a few people who have suffered this problem. What it boils down to is the fact that the door windows are pillarless, and are therefore not supported. If you open or close the door by pulling or pushing on the glass you gradually damage the winding mechanism. It is almost always on the passenger side as it is not their car and they know no better, whilst the caring Mini/BMW owner would be rather more gentle to their baby! Next time it looks like a friend is going to push the window to close the door, give them a shout! They may think you are nuts, but its better than having the car go back to the dealership every 6 months. It should be a relatively quick fix and covered under warranty. Hope this helps.

All the best,

Adam

Mini S

Just a heads up -- this happened on my 2003 MINI S as well.
Flip the switch - Hear the click - and see the lights dim -- but no window action.

My MINI is now awaiting service. Bummer too -- I enjoy my windows down with the current weather.

Fix your stuck window

interceptor -- thanks for the heads up.

I got a call back from my MINI dealer today. After explaining the stuck window issue -- MINI had a 'fix' for me.

With the car in aux or on -- sit in the passenger seat with the door open.
Press and hold the window switch up
Immediately, while holding the window up toggle -- with your fist -- punch / hit three inches above the large speaker -- three times. <bang bang bang>. Don't be easy on your MINI.
Let go of the toggle switch.
Press and hold the toggle switch up for 5 seconds.
Lower the window completely.
With the door still open
Raise the window completely. The window should have now "re-indexed" itself.
In case the indexing didn't work -- it would be wise for you to lower the window just slightly before closing the door.
Close the window.

Yes -- this worked on my MINI.

PasqualeIV, thanks, that just worked on my 2002S. I was prepared to spend several hundred dollars to fix it. Now I just have to figure out why my air bag light is on.....

Guys,
the stalling window saga is caused by a dirt build up/oxidisation on the copper amature of the window motor. The carbon brushes over time leave a sticky deposit which prevents the power getting to the motor.
The thumping of the door trick will work for a few months - and has to be one of the most impressive fixes for any fault but sadly eventually the window will stop altogether.
MINI normally try to charge you for a new motor - but there is an excellent guide on here somewhere on how to strip out the mechanism and clean it so it works perfectly again. Takes a couple of hours to do the job.
I think it is possibly lack of use of the passenger window which causes this as it always seems to be on the passenger door whether Left hand drive or right hand drive.

Thanks!! the dealership wanted to charge me $500 per window to get them fixed! This worked like a charm.

OMG! This worked!

I was thinking about removing the door cladding and working on the window motor with the guidance of my Bentley service manual, but decided to check online before doing anything.

Glad I did

Thanks PasqualeIV

I was very doubtful that this would work, but it does! Brilliant.
