No more CVTs?

Don't know if it is true...but I was shocked to read just now...in an article on new colors in the 2006 MINIs...that starting in 06 there will be no more CVTs

according to www.motoringfile.com

Is this so?

Edit: Info in the "Motortrend article" not the "color article" (sorry).

Are they going to the same transmission as the MCSa?

I dunno.

From the article:

[The MCS] Aluminum 170-horsepower, 1.6-liter direct-injection turbo four, with 10.5:1 compression ratio, more low-down torque, and freer revving up top, replaces current 168-horse iron lump. The twin-scroll turbo uses alternating exhaust pulses, the manifold pairing up cylinders one and four, two and three. BMW expects 15-percent-better fuel economy, which would be nearly 29 mpg and 37 mpg on the U.S. EPA cycles. The standard Cooper motor is a detuned direct-injection turbo making about 141 horses. Trannys are five- and six-speed manual and conventional automatic (no more CVT).

You are right, that does indicate no more CVTs. The CVT was kind of trick, I'll be sorry to see it go, but it will get rid of a lot of complaints. So many people expected a normal automatic.

Well, that's it then. Looks like I'll be keeping my 2003 Cooper CVT afterall. MINI already alter the lower grille and Xexon front lamps and the taillamps. Plus a few minor tweaks to the interior.

Who knows, just might have a future classic collectible 20 - 30 years from now.

FYI - the end of the CVT will begin with the R56 and the 2007 model year most likely.

Well, I'm sad to hear this, as the CVT is very versatile, and compliments the sporting nature of the MINI quite well. Glad I got one before they are gone.

Funny. They buy a "special" car and expect "normal" things. Get real.

I suppose it makes no sense for MINI to offer two different "automatics" in the future. I just hope that CVT owners won't be abandoned by our service departments.

On point,... several people predicted this would eventuate (if the news from Gabe's wonderful and complimentary website turns out to be true in 2007). It surely creates a collector car at some level.

Yes it should prove to be a collectors car. I strongly hope the parts for the CVT...and the rest of the original new MINI are well supported in coming years. Mildly concerned to tell the truth.

Figures that just as I was beginning to warm up to the idea of this little wizz-bang transmission they would go and.....

If there is no more cvt does that mean no more sport mode?
