It means there is something wrong with your transmission. I don't believe it means anything specific, but I think the manual says to take the car in to get checked out.

Apparently the engine is limited to 3,000rpm in EP mode. Some fault with the gearbox, have it checked out. Mine was a failed ECU.

Hi

My mini continually went into EP (Emergency Program) and after my fourth visit back to the dealer BMW had to replace both computers on my car at a considerable cost to BMW . Everything is going well now except I have developed a severe rattle in my door since having the work done so it looks like I will have to take my car back yet again. Only had it since May so this will be it's fifth visit back.

FOOTNOTE: When I first let the dealer know ( within a few days of picking up my car) and right up until they eventually fixed my car BMW have denied this ever happening to another car anywhere in the world and virtually said that if the replacement of both computers didn't work then I would be stuck with the problem - you can imagine what I told them - have not been impressed with the dealers lack of sympathy for my problem - noticed they are not interested in giving you anything to compensate for the inconvienence they have caused - that only happens BEFORE they get your money!

I had that happen yesterday... very odd... picked up my folks and took them to dinner.. (there were 4 of us in the car).. after dinner.. sue and I went to the car with the take home bag (Famous Dave's BBQ) and put it in the boot..
started the car.. It looked briefly like ED (musta said EP) but then went to D and the SES light came on.. and stayed on... THEN drove over to pick up the folks)who were waiting for us at the entrance...(they dont walk so well)
Car ran fine.. (we went to a show...) and the SES light stayed on..(note .. no problems when I picked them up and took them to the restaurant)

After the show (approx 3 hours) drove them home on the highway SES lightwas on the whole time...
Dropped them off..AND the Take Home bag .. and then ****! no SES light!!! was it them??? or a sensor that doesnt like BBQ???
