You can read here only about mini's with gearbox problems so I just want to hear what kind Gearbox you have? There must be at least one good box.. (I hope so)
My specs.
Mini, build in 2004
1st gearbox, 10 000km
2nd gearbox 12 000, and still alive..
52' Plate MINI One, gearbox went earlier this year with 15,000 miles , started slipping when I was pushing on, just within warranty though! Second gearbox fine, do you reckon they would replace it with a Getrag or what was there before?? seems a lot better
My 03 has had its Midlands box replaced at 18,000 miles. The replacement was notchy to start with but as it has run in has become smoother. Drove a loan car with a Getrag box yesterday and it was much notchier, but without the annoying faint "noise through the gate" that comes with the Midlands box. The loan car was out because my Cooper was in for a new steering column, under warranty after it developed a knock. With a rattle on the dash right up near the w/screen, they want it back for 6 hours to take the whole thing out and sort it. Have to say; i love the car but am not at all impressed with the build quality, and am thinking of getting rid of it before the warranty expires.. Once the TLC and warranty are out, i would be doing routine servicing myself, but with parts like this failing, its a question of what next ?..we will see...hard decision.
2002 MCS, the transmission has been perfect for the whole 36,000 smiles. Smooth, light shifts the whole way.
Installed a Ultrix short shift kit within the first 6 months and enjoyed the tightened shift pattern for the next 2.5 years. Will be installing another one in my '06 MCS whenever it arrives.
Motor on, Dudes and Dudettes!!!
'06 MCS SB/S
R84s(Kumho Ecsta AST, summer), R81s(Nokian Haakapiilatta 2, winter)
'02 MCS DS/W (retired)
When my gearbox went it was towed away on a Sunday morning and I went to pick it up the Tuesday evening! Not bad I didn't think. Hope you get yours sorted as quick!!
'52 Cooper, 5-speed 'box, 22000 miles. Has intermittent problems getting into reverse (I have to release the clutch and press it again to get the gear to engage) and going from first to second (or the other way around, I forget which). Most of the time, it's fine, though.
I recently had a couple of Mini Ones with '05 and '55 plates as courtesy cars. Would these have had the "Getrag" gearbox?
The gearchange action seemed really bad compared to my older box - the gearstick itself felt really cheap, plastic and flimsy and it took a lot more physical effort to change gear. The Midlands box which I've got feels much more solid (despite the minor problems I have from time to time).
YEA, Those ones have getrag gearboxes, and i dont like it.
i know i will eventually get used to it, but i felt i couldnt use the car to the best of its ability when overtaking because of the ratios, noticable mostly at second.
I love the way that the midlands gearbox can be driven happily in second to have a speedy over take at when driving slowly. Makes me feel safer.
I love the solid feeling also.
Can anyone put my mind at rest about the getrags?
