Rubber Windscreen Seal

I have searched for and read a few of the old threads about the rubber seal that runs along the top of the windscreen but not found an answer to my question...

In the middle of my windscreen the rubber seal has popped out, i can push it back in which woks for about a couple hours but especially after motorway driving, it pops back out n pulls more out with it.

I bought my MC second hand and was registered in april 02. All the services from the original TLC pack have been used, although the car is under 5yrs old and has done less than 50k miles therefore BMW told me I can renew it for £300. Not done this yet, but would this cover it if i did? Also... i am guessing my car will b out of warranty?

What this all boils down to is the fact that I cant afford to pay to have it done at the minute and I wouldl like to know (in addition to my other questions ), what is the best way to stick the seal back down myself? what shluld i use?

Also..... until I get it done, can any water get into my car? None seems to have so far that i have noticed, but i am worried some could be inbetween the interior roof and the exterior if you get me

TLC is the pre-payment for servicing, and very worthwhile paying for.

Warranty is different, and very pricey to re-new if you look at doing this there are other companies that will do warranty cheaper than BMW, and there is a thread on here about that

The window trim you are having problems with normally only comes out if the car has had the windscreen replaced, might be worth asking the place you brought it from if this is true, or check to see if you have the original warning sticker in the passenger top corner that says something like 'ATCHTUNG!!! Attention!!! '. It can be refitted, and you could get someone like autoglass to do it, as it has to be glued in, I image that if you can't find out who did the replacement and get them to correct it then there would only be a small charge to refit this trim.

cheers rakey!! Iv been reading some other threads on here, would it not be ok to get some rubber adhesive/cement and just stick it back in? there is only like a 12inch piece come out in the middle of the seal the rest is fine

mine does exactly the same & has started doing it more now its warm & the rubber is more flexible. i bought some loctite silicone adhesive from halfords yesterday & stuck it down by running a bead of adhesive along the top edge of the windscreen. it didn't come out this morning so fingers crossed

i dont think they are glued in as new, they rely on a tight fit between the top of the glass & the roof to keep it in place.

Not sure to be honest, suppose there are only a few things that could go wrong if you attempt it. Not sure if the adhesive could go all the way into the car or how you judge if enough is enough, but if you're feeling brave, go for it

Hi there,the loose seal is normally kept in place by the windscreen as Rakey correctly says but it should be possible to cement it back in.There is no danger of any water getting into the vehicle as the windscreen is bonded in below this aperture.If you are going to try re-gluing the seal just be careful as to how much of the gooey stuff you use as it will go everywhere when you finally press the seal home!!Best of luck.

thanks a lot for all you help i have bought some silicone sealer. Small tube made for cars says it is for rubber, vinyl and metal. I wil make sure i dont put too much on, press it down and hold it in place over night in the garage with a piece of masking tape. Im guessing that the masking tape should be fine on the paint work overnight?

yup, masking tape will be fine. i didn't bother with this though - just pushed the seal back in & left it overnight

quick update.... used the silicon sealer, seems to have worked fine Left it overnight in my garage. Although... i havent taken it on the motorway yet or drove at high speeds, if there are any problems with it i will post back incase anyone else is having the same problem.

Hi,

It would not cost a lot to put the top trim back in properley. Depending on the condition of the trim and the gap between the trim and the glass, it should be just labor costs, which if you find a friendly depot manager he may nock a couple of quid off for you.

You should also check to see if your screen has been replaced withing the last three years, if so then under some companies poloices you may be able to get the problem corrected Free of charge.
