Mini One D Head Gasket Blown

Just returned from my dealer with the bad news that the head gasket is blown on my 04 one D. It initially overheated last week when I was informed that it was a cracked expansion tank which was replaced under warranty but the next day it overheated again and have been informed that as I suspected in the first place the head gasket has blown.I am concerned that they may be other damage as a result. So has anyone had a similar experience and did it have a successful conclusion. Is replacing the head gasket just dealing with symptom rather than the cause??

Hello,
Welcome to MINI2, not so good first post though?!
There is not normally any problems reported with these engines as it's a Toyota unit tweeked by BMW.
Has the car had any performance modification like a engine re-map or chip?

Head gasket should not go without something causing it unless it is high mileage.

This engine is very reliable so I'm surprised that this has happened. The cause needs to be found.

It was acceptable in the 80's

The headgasket can go in a situation like yours if the engine has overheated in the past.

At the worst case, your engine may not have fully survived the overheat, which may have caused the block or head to warp.

However, it may as said just be that the head gasket has failed due to the overheat which means once replaced you'll be up and running again!
I'm a member of the Toyota owners club and have been for many years, and i'm aware that this engine is pretty much bullet proof normally.

So you just gotta hope these problems are just due to it overheating in the first place.

Best of luck!
