Blown Engine : -(

Unfortunately this morning saw the sad demise of my 2002 Cooper Engine (Don't ask but it involved a large lorry and a pretty deep puddle!). I am now faced with a number of different options. I could get a new engine whacked in by BMW through insurance, this will loose 10 year of no claims and force up my premium (could the car become a write off due to un-economical repair?). Second option is to buy engine from E-bay/breakers and have associate who owns garage to fit for me. If I take this route then have to consider whether it is feasible to pt an S engine in.

I know the common sense arguments that suggest that it is expensive and difficult to transplant an S into a Cooper. However, if you are already going to be spending X on replacing the cooper engine then why not replace with an S and then for cost X + Y = loads more fun!

I guess I need to understand the magnitude of this project. Are there any views on the various issues and what it may cost above the straight cooper swap?

Any help much appreciated.

Danny B

Wow, that sucks. Seems like there would be more involved putting a S engine in a cooper, as its not just the engine that is different. ECU, battery in the boot, different air intake etc.

I am sure someone has said this before, but make sure you get protected no claims. At least I can make 2 claims in 2 years without loosing my discount.

Wales S engine In a Cooper

Danny My oppinion project it's just not viable.
To do it replace gearbox / engine, Insurance loading about 40% if they will do it.
low resale value when you come to sell it
But a better option to remap it to 130 bhp, half the cost of an S conversion.
Good Luck

Garry
