Shifter squeek

Sorry if this is repetitive but I did try a search. My 2003 MCS, having been off the road for some months, is back on active duty. After an inspection, 2 problems appeared. The license plate light assembly in the rear has corroded and I'll have to replace that before Officer Friendly spots me. And, here's where I need help, there is a not-so-loud-but annoying squeek in the shifter. Can this be lubricated? Details, please, on access, do-it-yourself, etc. Thanks.

Hey, John, sorry about the problems but here's what you do. Call MINI of Peabody, talk to Dave in parts. He's a great guy and most helpful. He'll order you a new hatch handle/license light assembly. He'll also ask what color your car is 'cause the assembly in black is @ $75.00 and painted differently, twice that. Yes, you arelucky to have a LY/B MINI so the black will be just fine. Actually, it'll make SCAR-GO even more of a legend.

Then, because he's Dave and Peabody is Peabody, he asks, "What else is up?"

I tell him about the gear squeek. "Hold on a minute," says Dave. Soon, I'm chatting with a tech who suggests that I remove the airbox, locate the shift linkage, and hit it with Zep 2000.

10-4

And folks wonder why this dealership is so freakin' popular.

I think you will find that the ball/socket joints on the gear linkage are teflon , teflon can react with some lubricants and cause ongoing problems, silicon grease is probably best for these joints, for future reference

Thanks for the info. The Zep product does contain teflon but I'll do more research before spraying. Anyone in US know of a better product for this? Gav?
