Bizarre Engine & EML Failure

Hello all,

Last night my Cooper Works developed some bizarre symptoms that ultimatley resulted with the dreaded EML light being activated. The car is barely 18 months old and has already had a CPU replacement at 7000 miles. Last night I noted a change in engine tone, not quit a knocking, but more like a rattle, in a matter of minutes the noise got louder, there was no change in engine performance, temperature or oil light coming on. Deciding not to continue, I stopped, checked the oil, not particularly low, topped up the oil, let the car settle for a while and started it back up. The noise had sunbsided, still no temp change, oil light or performance change. Continued home, within literally yards of home, the noise had returned, still no warning light etc, then the car lurched, as if the car was stalling or clutch had been dumped, engine performance went into limp mode, finallly as I pulled into my road the EML light came on. Having contacted Mini assist, I am waiting on a visit today, very concerned that the engine management system has failed, wondering if anyone out there has had this experience or any ideas what has happened, I'm trusting of course that the warranty will deal with this, but concerned that this has occured with no real warning or indication from the controls that there was a problem!!

Cheers... Steve.

If you try searching for "limp home mode" and "eml light" you might find some answers while waiting for a more direct reply.

I hate to say this, but if you have heard noises from the engine prior to your lights coming on and entering into limp mode, I think you have a real problem. I think your best option at this stage is to let the dealer run a diagnostic check to find out what is going on.
