how long will it take a mechanic to take Gearbox out???

After my mini being in the garage for 8 weeks today, im told my bill is goin to be close to £1300 from what was goin to be a gearbox change to just the diff as im being told.
the price of this diff is around the £100 mark and a new clutch is £140 so the rest is goin to be labour.

the mechanic has told me it takes 3 hours to take the gearbox out and 3 hours back in.....

at £40 per hour labour

there is other costs in this price also but im wondering if this lenght of time to put the gearbox in and out and a clutch change is right as i dont think so.....

any help from you guys ASAP will be great

preferably a mechanic or some1 who has had any similar work done!

cheers scott

i've not taken out a mini gearbox but it is a fairly standard arrangement so 3 hour to remove and 3 hour to refit sounds about right. Once the gearbox is out the clutch takes a few minutes.

However to change the differential components the gearbox will need to be dismantled and rebuilt.. Again this should be fairly straightforward if the mechanic knows what he is doing. Most people leave gearbox rebuilding to specialist companies.

Hope this helps

Changing a clutch is a full days work, big job. Took 6 to 7 hours on my last MINI.

3 Hours sounds good going. I think the whole modular front end has to be removed for access before you can even get at the gearbox. Do a search for clutch replacement threads and you will see BMW have quoted some horrendous prices. £1300 sounds about right, and also expensive.

I would recommend the Bentley Mini Service Manual. Which I imagine is easy to get in the US. It covers jobs in more depth, but rarely has any shortcut tips. Sometimes you don't find those until after you've done the job, hindsight is such a wonderful thing

Our ICME book at work lists 6.1 hours for "CLUTCH PLATE, COVER & RELEASE BEARING. REMOVE & INSTALL".
This book is a Bible to most workshops when it comes to quoting for work so he's given you an accurate quote.
