Question Annoying Klunking Noise(carnt find cause)

Hi, I have got a mini one seven and for the last several months i have been having a problem where when i pull off in either forward or reverse i am getting a klunking noise, like metal hitting metal, it has recently started doing it when going along and changing gear and when applying the throtle or taking you foot off the power. its been in to mini several times and had all engine mounts changed and drive shaft. has any1 else ever had this problem or know what it could be. any advise will be very usefull???

Hi

I had what sounds like the same noise from my mc last year, the clunking noise came from the left front, the car went into the dealer ( Sytner Leicester) after several attempts to fix the problem they changed the gearbox ( Gertrag) Problem solved, they think the noise was coming from the diff section of the gearbox.
The noise started at about 4k the gearbox was finally replaced at 12k if you leave it it just gets louder.

thanks for the reply. do you know if the gear box will eventually fail? did they give you any charge for replacing it? has the problem come back on your new gear box since the problem was solved?

Hi Miniome7,

The gearbox was replaced under warranty, after a bit of a fight with BMW.

The gearbox was getting worse and developing more faults i believe it would have broken up completely if not replaced.

The car has now done 13k on the new gearbox with no problems.

I suggest you return the car to the dealer and demand they fix the car PDQ

Best of luck

this maybe an easy one to sort out..

hopefully

mine was in for a service the other day and i left the MINI dealership and 11yrds down the road i had a klunking noise everytime i changed gear and accel /deccelerated..

so a u-turn was done and straight back i went..

turned out that the exhaust shield under the radiator fill up point ( bottle at back of engine) had been pushed down slightly and was catching everytime the engine moved.. which gave this klunking noise..

so have a look and make sure its not that

Hope it's that easy, Jon!!

With mine, it's only when going first/reverse (i.e parking, 3-point turns) - when its sounds like someone smacking the engine/gearbox casing with a hammer (sometimes really hard, as well) when the clutch engages.

Normal road gearchanges are fine, even relatively high revs/quick changes.

yours may not be that easy then... you might have an engine mount loose

if you had an OLD CLASSIC mini then an engine mount would be the case.. so who knows..

I really hope it's only an engine mount, then.

This morning, dealer has agreed that this noise is a known fault & that the car has failed the test to prove the fault.

They have agreed to a new clutch and possibly a new gearbox, both under warranty & without any prompting - so I would say go & see the dealer straight away, if you're in warranty period.
